is there a HUGE difference in growth if you use a metal halide to veg rather than a hps?

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe HPS is the incorrect wavelength/kelvin so I don't think you can use it for veg...

[Edit] My bad I just saw this thread http://boards.cannabis.com/indoor-lighting/148366-hps-veg.html and according to people there, you should be OK.

While you can use HPS, you'll find MH to be much better suited for vegetative. The 'cooler' wavelengths of the MH keep the plant from stretching as much, keeping it shorter and bushier. The 'warmer' wavelengths of the HPS are better for flowering because that is what helps trigger the budding.

thanks alot

In my experience HPS with a tad of blue spectrum is the best. You get more lumes, and the small amount of blue will help to off set the stretching that HPS alone produces, giving you an all around quicker growth during veg.
