View Full Version : Lights Out.....Why?

Again, looking for input from those smarter than I (or at least more experienced):
I've heard of turning the lights out on a grow at the very end and letting them finish in darkness for the last (24,48,72?)hrs. I'm not able to uncover any documented information on the subject (which in itself is surprising, as Jorge Cervantes never seems at a lack for something to say on any subject.) Nonetheless, is there some school of thought that I'm missing here? Anybody feel strongly one way or the other about it? Anybody ever tried it?
Thanks, fellow travelers....

My school of thought is leaving the plants in darkness make them use up every last bit of nutes in their root system for bud production, I could be wrong but what I've read suggests that :)

when you put your plants in darkness for extended time (3 days or so) at the end of the grow it makes the plant think its dieing and push the sugars from the leaves into the buds

I have actually read from a Hight TImes ( i give no credibility to them) that Dr. Atomic prefers to give a 3 day dark period at the end of the harvest because it 'tricks the plant into thinking that its about to die and needs to try and grab the last bit of pollen from the air to try and survive' (not exact quote but close to what he says, ask me tomorrow and i will type the exact words of D.A.....too sleepy now)
my own opinion is that if i were to try it myself i would think i would not notice any difference than if i harvested normally(which i do)

Plant thinks it's time to die regardless due to light cycle change to 12/12 = winters comin -n- it's time to reproduce . I haven't seen any hard proof / evidence that 3 days darkness does anything for you .
Rhizomeeeeeeee !!!!!!
Please enlighten us on this subject . I'm curious what your take is on this bro. ?

My take on this? It's BS.
The only thing that an extended dark period will do is inhibit florigen re-uptake, which would seem to maybe encourage a final burst of sexual expression- but then you kill the plant well before all that florigen can do anything.
What actually happens is that the grower doesn't SEE the plant during this black-out period. We all know how quickly things move near the end- A couple of days can make a big differance.
It's kinda like leaving your puppy behind while you go on vacation- said pup is going to be noticabley bigger a week later. If you hadn't gone away, you would have seen the pup every day, and wouldn't have noticed.
Also, that dark period is one last chance for mold to spring up when yer plants are at their most vulnerable, so if you feel like you have to do this, leave the fans running.
