what is RO water?

Reverse Osmosis: water is passed through a semi-permeable membrane to remove particulate matter and chemicals. It is typically used for growing if your water source has a very high TDS concentration. If you have a lot of crud in your water, RO removes it and strips your water of everything in it.

what does it do to help the plants?

Nothing, or everything. As mentioned above, it is usually a means of cleaning a dirty water source.

and where can I get it?

You can purchase it from the grocery store, or buy a small system that you plumb to your sink for home use.

Have you ever seen those water towers in front of drug or grocery stores. You know the ones that you bring our own 1g, 3g or 5g water jug and fill them up for $.25 per gallon? If you have one of those close to you they are great. Only $.25 per gallon and clean.

Just be sure to add in CalMag+ or the like if you are going to use RO water. RO water takes everything out of the water. Even the secondary elements your plant will need. The CalMag will add those back in there.

Keep in mind, you don't need to mess with RO water unless there is something about your tap water that the plants don't like. If the water out of your tap is suitable for growing, switching to RO water would actually be less beneficial to the plants.
