View Full Version : Is a 2 ft. Deep closet too narrow for 1000w?

I'm curious if there is any fire danger to putting such a large light in such a small spot.
It's an air cooled 1000w HPS with a hood that almost reaches both sides of the closet.
Am I being paranoid?

The only thing that causes fire are
1: Heat
2: Bad Electrical
However, how tall is this, cause 1000w HPS so close to the walls cant be that far from the plants so u could totally fry them.

I can hang the light as high as 6 feet without any modifications to the space.

I am planning on growing a sea of green. I'm going to be budding a bunch of seedlings, blooming at 8-10 inches.

So, the area is a 2' x 2' enclosed closet? If so, a 1000w HPS is going to have to be super-ventilated in order to keep temperatures down. Will you be able to make some holes in the drywall/attic/door to allow for active ventilation?
Going with a 600w system would help keep the heat down, but even it would need to be sufficiently ventilated to keep from cooking everything in the closet like an oven.

Super Ventilated? More like Super Turbo! Damn!

The space is 6 feet wide, 2 feet deep and 6 feet tall. The narrowness seems to be the biggest constraint.
I have an inline turbo exhaust for the air cooled 1000W. Should I assist with and additional intake fan or another exhaust?

It's still gonna run almost 24/7.

If you're going to start with the 1000W (or any HID for that matter), you should do a dry run for about 24-48 hours with the light burning, and the fans circulating the air however you're going to have it setup for the grow. Keep tabs on your temps. I don't know how well your inline exhaust fan will work, so the best way for you to find out is to test it yourself. But the light is definitely going to get warm, you should adjust accordingly. Ventilation is just as crucial as lighting, so don't skimp on it!

I have no earthly idea, but I'm curious to find out as well! My wife asked me the same question one night, but I never saved the actual file...just linked to the picture. So now I can't blow the image up to find out.

Ventilation is the most important!Without ventilation there can be no light. Were talkin' HID,now.......

In that tiny space the only way you can run 1000w is water cooled. It's way overkill. A 1000w HPS is appropriate for a 4x4 - 5x5 space.
For a 2x2 you should consider a 250 or a 400, both with air cooling. Or CFLs.
Or a bigger space! :D

Peace, man! Your light for the 12 sq feet is just fine! I'm using 2x600 w HPS gavitas which is 86 000 lumies each for the 2'depth x 3width x 5'heightcloset. The only thing is to maintain ambient temperature, which is not a problem with powerfull fan. The more light per area you use the higher bud/stalk&leaf ratio, which is one of your aims. I bet you will receive high bud output ! just go for it, bring more love peace and happiness to this world!

Seems like the best way is to just try it out on a dry run first. If its too small, I'll just buy a cabinet.

Crap! The light emits over 100000 lumens. I think my space is gonna be too small....

PAR wattage is just about right for 2 by 6 feet sq garden. Walls lined with foil and 300cfm fan and ventilation holes at level with stems of cannabis will give you tremendous rezults!

Were you just thinking about getting a 1000W?
It'll be tough to keep the temps down in such a small area, unless you make a whole bunch of modifications for airflow. You'd be better off going with a 600 or smaller, if you're bound & determined to go the route of an HID. Keep it air-cooled and exhausted, regardless of what size lamp you go with.

I have to admit, water cooled lighting would be pretty awesome!

I own the light, its just in use right now for a grow with much more space... Finishing a few Bubbleberry, Hindu Kush, and Shiva Skunk.
I'm going to give this space a try, but if I see a 3' deep cabinet, i'm buying it... I'm going to sacrifice 1 clone to see if it can survive a couple days of veg in the thin closet.
Anyone have any creative venting solutions? I have 1 turbo inline exhaust, but I think I may need more sophisticated airation/cooling ideas.

If you were to cut a hole in the ceiling of the closet, where will it lead? In my last house, I considered running a 600W system out of a similar sized closet. I had purchased everything I thought I'd need, and ended up making an entirely new space for my grows.
But I was planning on exhausting using an 800cfm blower attached to my air-cooled hood and routed via ducting through a carbon filter, all before being vented into the attic above. I was actually planning on removing the doorknob assembly and sticking another smaller blower or axial fan in the open hole for intake, but I ended up never using the space after all.
A few ideas, but you're still going to have a hell of a time keeping a 1000W HID cool. Like Stinky mentioned before, if you're able to secure a larger space, it would be much more accommodating to such a large lamp.

Clan, 800cfm fan could handle two 600 watts hpses and a hid lamp!

It was one of the most powerful fans I could find at the time, and I was able to get a great deal on it. Like I mentioned earlier, I was planning on using it in a really small area with a 600W MH/HPS...plus, odor control was going to be extremely important. I ended up not having to use the area after all, but decided to keep the fan, and am glad I did so. Now I have three HID systems, a 400/600/1000W, and a big blower comes in handy!

It's far from a kingdom, I'm still daydreaming of having the setup that I really want. I think a friend is interested in the digital 600 system, so I'll probably be losing that one soon. I'll eventually get a grow log together when I get a really nice strain to play with. But first I'm gonna have to find my digital camera, then figure out how to work the damn thing. I've tried taking some closeups of manicured buds before, but I can never seem to get the settings right. They always look out of focus and blurred on the computer, regardless of how they appear on the display. I'll get it, eventually. Maybe one day I'll resign myself to actually sitting down and reading the manual...
