We have The Houston Press.. Its the coolest newspaper. They are considered the "alternative" to our Hearst Publicated Chronicle. they publish independent pieces without much censoring. They take votes on what the seediest Gay bar in houston is, which turns out was the one I practically lived in lol.. and the death metal rock performances at the small warehouse venues that no one else would print. they cover the stuff that isnt pretty enough for the other publications. they let people bitch. they cover the roller derby and the pagan pride, and gay pride celebrations, and what their resident stoner blogger get into on his free time.. And best of all its free.. they also feature the "Ask a Mexican" column.. Its highlarious. its online too if ya wanna check it out... theyre big on pot too which is always cool.. last 4/20 the cover had a big pot leaf and it was an article on the history and origin of 4:20 and the celebrations for 4/20 around town. the planned group smoke outs at 4:20 on 4/20.. snapped pics of ppl smokin and having fun.. dining guide with price index, reviews, local want ads and what they call the wildside page or something with the funniest want ads for like weird sexual fetishes and kinks.. always fun to read while severly stoned.. do you have something like this?

We have the Valley Advocate, which is a very progressive cultural and political voice in the area. They cover the same sorts of events and the articles are always thought-provoking and at times quite funny. The recurring columns like Ask Isadora and News of the Weird are always good for a giggle, and they sponsor an annual 'Best of the Valley' poll where clubs, bands, restaurants, microbreweries, radio shows, etc. are recognized. If you ever come to Western MA, look for the award placards hanging in every decent restaurant around. If it says, 'Best ribs 2006' order the ribs. If it says 'Best place to meet after work 2007' go there at 5:30 on Friday. You get the picture.

We have The Dallas Observer. It's an edgy and free-thinking weekly and full of good editorial content, but it's almost too full of ads to tolerate these days. You really have to look hard to find its articles. Still, I like it. They're not afraid to speak up and call something baloney when they need to. The regular Dallas daily paper is very conservative and safe, very sold out to Dallas society and conservative Texas politics. One of the best articles I ever read about recreational and medical marijuana was written in The Dallas Observer about three years ago.

We have the City Pages here Music, Restaurants, Movies, Arts, News and Classifieds Weekly in Minneapolis & St. Paul - City Pages (Minneapolis/St. Paul) (http://www.citypages.com) ... it's actually a really well organized alt press paper, I think it's one many awards. Cool articles about local music, and events all the time, and just stuff not usually covered by the big papers.
