It's time for an open source book on our beloved plant Cannabis Sativa.

Open-Source Over Grow Project

I've been on this forum, icmag, gardenscure, hg420, and others as a poster and lurker. I've grow several crops indoor and out. I figure it's time to write an e-book.

The Concept

I would like to start a project to create an e-book (in PDF format) that includes everything about cannabis, from growing to smoking to laws. The difference between this book and other books is it will be open source and free to everyone, i want people to help create it, edit it, and bring to life a monster. (i know it sounds cheesy ha ha)

Original Idea

I first got the idea while i was browsing a forum and someone was putting together a PDF on how to construct a nice little cabinet, but they never ended up finishing the project. Pondering my options on my next cab i decided i would document every aspect of the build and put together PDF for all to see. Well now my mind was excited and i said hell why not just create a whole open source book that will evolve. That's what I'm doing now.

Process

What i will be doing is building my cab and i will create a PDF (this is going to take a while as I'm a current student also). Inside the PDF with be DIY projects (carbon filter, wiring lights, ventilation, etc.) from the cannabis community greats. I have no intentions on taking credit for other peoples ideas so all people who's DIY projects i use will get credit.

Credibility

I know this is my first post, but that is because i had to create a new name for security reasons and i will be using this name (including using it on other cannabis forums) for the project.

Anyway i just really want a good go-to resource book for newbs and old-timers alike. And i want something that won't be shutdown (like overgrow ).

So please add your comments, questions, criticism, and content. Let the journey begin and OVERGROW the WORLD!

Maybe set it up as a wiki?

maybe someone could do that, but i'm gonna start with a PDF so people can print it, store it on a disk, whatever. I just want the document to be mobile even to people without internet ( a friend could show them the file).

EDIT: and i see your suspicious. Its all good! You will see in due time...

Pdf's not a great format for collaborative work, IMHO- and requires that someone act as author and sign on for maintenance-

Don't really see how a pdf can be open source- (by definition user editable)

What licence/copyright scheme are you planning?

well i guess it could start as a wiki and then every so often a "hardcopy" could be created (as in a version) and put up for download. That way it can edited and still be transfered pretty easily. I wasn't planning anything official for licensing/copyright, i just wanted to start a grass roots project to create an e-book.

The problem with the wiki, is i can't host a site, nor do i wish to pay for one to be hosted. Also as i said before i don't want an entire site to get taken down and have to try to recover bits (like overgrow).

BTW-Thanks for the ideas

Does anyone know of any free PDF style program? I think the best thing to do would to be create a document with a free program that way everyone could download and edit if they like.

Another reason i like a PDF is the ability to format like a book easily. I'm a photographer and so i would like to include lots of pictures and format text around pictures and have a nice cover, etc.

Well For now I'm gonna start brainstorming the topics included.

Main topics should be something like:

Laws about Cannabis
Consuming Cannabis
Growing Cannabis
Maybe history? (i know most books already talk about history of cannabis, do you think it should be included?)

Then within each main Section with be smaller chapters:

Laws:
laws in your country
laws in your state
what you can do to change these laws
how to avoid being busted
what to do if you are busted for possession
what to do if your busted for growing

Consuming:
which way is healthiest
how to make your own pipe/bong
how to bake with cannabis

Growing: (both an indoor and outdoor section)
grow room set-up and design
fertilizers
propagation
vegetative growth
flowering
harvesting

Any more ideas?

I'm working on an article for germinating seeds and i was wondering if anyone was available to proof read and let me know if any information is correct. Preferably someone with a higher post count.

Hon, you forgot medical usage/studies. Personally, I dislike PDFs, but feel free to add my two posts to your compendium. The big one (about 50 pages) is in the link in my sig. The New Year's post is an update of new studies (about 10 more). Good luck on your project!- Granny:hippy:

I've got no problem with you crediting me as "Storm Crow". Once you get things going, give me a yell. I work in education and am a pretty good proof-reader. - Granny:hippy:

yeah i don't mind if it's a lower post count, i was just thinking of e-mailing it and i wanted someone trustworthy, but then i realized i can just PM it. So anyone who wants to get in on this can!

I've started a wiki, but i realized a problem. Wiki sites usually log IP address and i don't want people to expose themselves so does anyone know of a wiki that doesn't log IPs?
