View Full Version : Agree or disagree? The importance of Set and Setting with Cannabis

I just quickly wrote this up so it's not college essay material, but I am curious as to what others think of this notion regarding set and setting and cannabis use. This is not a religious point (and I didn't make any references to God, although I do believe in an afterlife), so do not confuse spirituality (having to do with deep, often religious, feelings and beliefs, including a personâ??s sense of peace, purpose, connection to others, etc) with religion.

---

I have decided to write this after reading an excerpt from a near death experience in which the person who had this experience experienced complete oneness with the world and the universe. Although we cannot be completely sure what happens when we die, using psychedelics can give us a much deeper and personable exploration into the world of ego death and selflessness. That oneness with the universe that the person described is a very similar effect to the one I receive while under the influence of Cannabis and only under a certain type of set and setting.

What I have gathered from my experiments with Cannabis is that the absolute best way to do it and get meaning, insight, enlightenment and oneness, is to do it by yourself. I feel doing Cannabis in a social setting really limits the effects of what could be. When you are around other people â?? anyone, you put on a certain persona, whether you realize it or not. Itâ??s not the real you. This can be evident from simple things like you perhaps wouldnâ??t pick your nose around people, or you wouldnâ??t just take off your pants and start masturbating whenever you felt like it around other people. You are limited by that persona whether it is out of manners or judgment. This can, Iâ??m sure, be lightened if you are around someone that you feel comfortable with, but there is still a social shield, even if it is a smaller around other people. When you are by yourself you are completely and utter free to do whatever you want, without judgment. This openness and transparency with yourself is exactly the type of set and setting you want if you want to get the most out of cannabis. Doing cannabis around a lot of people or in a party situation can be socially rewarding, but that is about it. Doing cannabis alone and with the set and setting described can be both spiritually, intellectually and introspectionally rewarding. I also believe that moderation is key, as if you do it everyday it dulls the experience. Once or twice a week and in relatively high doses. I believe that is the way to do it if you want to get the most out of cannabis. And I believe cannabis has a lot to give. The feeling of oneness with the universe and nature and self is one of the most amazing feelings in the world and could even be a glimpse of what the true self and consciousness is all about.

I think that's true sometimes but I also disagree... I think if you are smoking weed alone you are still limited to you and your views, and I know for me I have learned a lot from other people high.

Also,a lot of the time my best friend and I just sit there silently and do whatever we want to do, and it's just as good as by yourself. And then we can talk if we feel like it, or not.

I had a boyfriend who I used to get high with and we'd draw on each other all the time and make art together, which neither of us could have done if we were smoking alone.
Soyeah. I prefer smoking with one or maybe two really close friends than alone.
