View Full Version : Do you think ice in a bong really cools the smoke?

I just bought myself my first piece here in NZ. It has a large twist/ ice catch. I was wondering is it more just for show or do do you think the ice really manages to cool the smoke in those few seconds your hot smoke rushes by it?

It's all preference man, try it out, if you like it, keep doing it. I think it cools the smoke more so then without ice..

It does really cool down the smoke. I tried it a few times and it was better than just with some water in it.

yea it does cool it, especially if you got one of those fridges with an ice dispenser and you can get crushed ice, since my bong dosent got a catcher i fill it up with crushed ice and it works like a charm.

Ice doesnt just cool smoke, it filters it. When it passes through the ice chambers their is a huge temperature differential thir this causes alot of tar to build up on the glass, this is tar filtered from your smoke. Ice is much more than just cool smoke

^^What Mad Sativa said
Once you try an ice bong you always want an ice bong.

It also makes the bong colder to hold. That's always neat.

A bong with no ice is just wrong, not nice. :rasta:

If you have access to snow, try some of that, works wonders.

what if you have a normal bong.... and you replace the bong water with ice.... would that still have the same effect?

Ice cools down the water. Nobody can argue that. That water is what the smoke travels through. The walls of the bubbles containing water is where the heat transfer takes place. Colder water makes the smoke colder. Another way to make smoke cooler is increase the surface area of the smoke to water (i.e. make the bubbles smaller). Percolators and diffusers are both methods of doing such.
Ice in the bong (i.e. one with an ice catcher) cools the smoke as it passes over it like how a hair dryer heats the air when it passes over a heating elemnt... just the reverse. Colder smoke burns less and makes for a better hit. ;)

I would use water AND ice.
The ice helps filter and cool the smoke, but the water does the same thing (just lesser), so its healthier (and tastier) to do both.

there is a big difference. ice cools the smoke nice. the only thing i can see, and i dont know how much this takes place, is that wont some of the THC cool down so that it isnt a vapor anymore??

cheers everyone, I couldnt conceptualize how it could really make it colder so fast. If the thing about condensing tar is true, then thats awesome

yeah I made a sobe bottle water bong once and i couldnt really tell that i had hits the first few times i hit off it, till i saw the huge rolls of smoke. :P It was really really nice, in a matter of fact when i dropped and busted my bong (long story) i had to go back to j's and it sucked. i actually stopped for 3 months after that.

course it cools the smoke...although i've always felt that ice in the bong water does the job better than an ice twist thingy.

Hey, you beat me to it!
Image is 100% correct. Hot water is just as smooth, almost like smoking a bowl in a steamy shower...
And...
Maximum conservation on one's fine erb, ice wastes THC
Have you all heard of ice extraction to make hash? One can even make hash without ice, simply cold water extraction.
So when the objective is to breathe in smoke with lots of THC in it, having cold water or ice in the bong is counterproductive.
However, HOT water does not cause the vapors to condense, and one receives more bang for his or her buck!

Wrong, after herb is burnt it is not like extracting hash in a gumby/Ice-olator method, putting hot water is a big no-no especialy if your putting ice in an ice catcher and hott water into a glass peiece. The temerature differance along with the romm tem can make your nice bong break. I saw this happen last night with a friends nice roor, he paid about $600 for it had 2 percs a difuser and and ice catcher, I told him not to do it cause the thought of it was stuipid in the first place. But it was his peoice and he did it we went out side where it was about 20 deg F. and the bottm half cracked. I make glass on glass bongs so it is an easy fix, but right now I am not blowing so he will have too wait. I told him not too, only when you have a sore throght or a cold do you fill the bong with warm water and no ice

I do not believe I nor Image meant to suggest using hot water and ice in the same bong. And yes, it is not wise to take a bong with hot water out in 20 degree F weather.
Use HOT water in your bong, indoors, and get more bang for your buck!

well the lighter was able to HEAT it in just a few seconds, the ice helps, believe me
