I work in a school and recently my teacher, looking for ways to encourage better vocabulary, stumbled on freerice.com.
When you are bored, depressed, or just have a few minutes to spare, play the game! It is a very simple vocabulary game. Every time you guess right, 20 grains of rice are donated to the UN. There is no penalty for a wrong guess. One bowl (100 grains) at a time, it adds up. CNN had an article on this site.
My Special Ed class donated 32,100 grains of rice yesterday. My teacher, the other aide, most of our students and me, were all working together- of course, the kids had to finish their work to be able to play :D and we all love the game! We are challenging the Emotionally Disturbed class at our school to better our score! (and I'm challenging YOU!) Everybody is winning with this one! Friendly competition between classes, staff and students bonding over a mutual interest, vocabularies are increased, egos are boosted (doing something truly important and meaningful is so rare for my kids :D ) and someone who needs it, is fed.

An overweight kid, who is pretty much a slacker in a "regular" class, came up to me and said "Ya know that rice game? I got 3,000 grains of rice last night! Took me hours!" I gave him a "high five" and a big "WAY TO GO"! He was so proud of himself- and rightly so! - Granny:hippy:

Wow the words get tooough...I got to 1260 without a dictionary, got to 1640 with one online. Fianlly got to metic without finding anything. Bummer. Good stuff. I like the idea that I give nothing to society normally, but I can sit in my underwear and feed starving people in the world by playing a vocab game. +Rep to you for making me feel a little bit better about myself, at least for the time being.

If each word i translate ACTUALLY donates 20 grains of rice, this is a pretty amazing (and simple) way to help the world community. My dream is to someday toke up with my grandma, if only she was as tight as you!

50!- every time! I was raised on Scrabble and crosswords! lol Granny:hippy:
ps- just racked up 4200 grains of rice (420 ten times over) for this go-round! I'm working on a late gift for a friend- her family tree- and the downloads are S-L-O-W, so I pop back and forth and get the rice while I wait.

This is a great site.... I literally got over 2000 grains of rice in a few minutes of my lunch break... I can't seem to get above level 50 though.

I'm stuck at 42 but keep going down to 41 and earning it back. I can't seem to get any farther without screwing a word up. I got 4,000 grains of rice though.
50 seems damn impossible though. Are you guys using a dictionary? I'm no slouch in English myself.
Storm Crow
12-26-2007, 06:54 PM
No, I don't use a dictionary. I tutored English in college, love word games and read a wide range of subjects. And somehow, a lot of it "sticks"!- Granny:hippy:

Great site and rather fun to play, although it did make me hungry myself so I had to go and get food then come back to it.

I love the economics of stuff like this, each view of the site earns it enough revenue from advertising to pay for 20 grains of rice. Thats pretty hardcore. Its like the site where you got a free i-pod if you got some friends to sign up to trial stuff, all the money comes from advertising. <3 teh internets.

Well one night (the night before they switched it to 20 grains per question) I got over 10,000. Almost right after 10,000 grains they changed it to 20 grains per question and I played for a little more.

What a cool site! I just jumped on and sent 7000. I topped out at level 47, and that is my personal best target to beat- any challengers?
I plan to use this site in my classes next semester, as an in-class activity, though I will have to permit dictionaries since many of the words are too hard for college kids who don't read much. But it seems like a great tool to boost vocabulary, as well as of course helping others- Thanks Storm Crow!

One of my New Year's resolutions is to earn 10,000 grains a day. So far, so good!
My highest total for one day was 42,000 grains of rice (420 x 100) with a 50 level. I dare you to try and beat that! (Normally, I'm not this much of an egotist, but it's a such good cause! ;)) - Granny:hippy:

I would play more, but there are 29,000 grains of rice (on average) in a pound. That just ruined it for me, although I will continue to play (it really does help to improve vocabulary). And StormCrow, YOU'RE ON. Or maybe tomorrow.........

Dread, you are looking at it as dry rice! Cooked, a pound of rice, plus whatever can be scrounged can be a whole family's food! Cook up a pound of real rice and see how much it is!
There are over 20,000 ACTIVE members here at C.com. If every one of them did just 420 grains a day, C.com would be donating about 290 pounds of rice every day! (20,000 x 420 =8,400,000 grains divide by 29,000 = 289.6 pounds) THAT would feed a village for a day or two! We could do it!
(I'm up to 3,000 grains this morning, 50/50 level and ZERO mistakes!- Granny sticks fingers in ears, going "Nanny-nanny-nah-nah!" :D LOL)- Granny:hippy:

Yes I do realize that is dry rice... but still, the sponsors could up the rate just a little bit, rice is very cheap.
Storm Crow
01-05-2008, 02:26 AM
Hey, it used to be 10 grains of rice!
Enough folks played it that new sponsors signed on, so they were able to raise it to 20 grains of rice. Keep playing! Make it popular! The more we play, the more sponsors will think freerice is a site they should be on! More sponsors means more rice per try, which makes it worth playing more, which gets more sponsors' interest........
(Finally, "a vicious circle" that isn't vicious! :D )
Old poem-
"Little drops of water,
tiny grains of sand,
Make the mighty ocean
and the pleasant land"
