SUV Trunk?

I had a legal question concerning SUVs.. If a cop has probable cause, he can search your vehicle, but needs a warrant for the trunk, right? But what if you have an SUV, with no real trunk: does that give him the right to search the back part of the car too? If you partitioned it with a cover, could it function as a trunk, or only protect against the plain-sight rule?
