You're friend is either: misinformed or being a douche
I refuse to believe it. Cannabis is illegal in the Netherlands due to their obligations to the international treaties, they can't legalize it if they wanted to. So they decriminalized possesion of up to 5 grams. They may be reducing the number of coffeeshops but they''re not irradicating them all together. They're there to stay, imo.

the thing they was thinking of doin was if you are not a citizen of amsterdam and you are caught smoking cannabis they WILL inforce the law apon you, but like drag commented on i just cant see them stopping theyre most renowned tourism pulls.

I Dont think this is true... why would they just suddenly make it illegal???
Because in reality Nederland is very catholic.
Because they get flack from other European countries because of drug tourism and the amount of French and German smugglers.
Because some Nederlanders believe it brings in the wrong kind of tourist.

This is why we need open free discussion. People have differing beliefs, now, certain issues aren't necessarily going to be as simple as 'right or 'wrong' there are many factors about cannabis. I strongly believe that any government should not have the power to restrict my freedom or liberty because i am consuming cannabis. As society, i believe it is our duty to respect each other and help each other, to progress our civilization as a whole. If i am not causing harm to anyone, then i should not be imposed apon by penalty of law. What is harm? Harm is physical damage, it is the breach of any one of my human rights, my interests. Words are words, they are not harm, offense is not harm. When i consume cannabis i cause no offense, i do not harm others because it is a self regarding action. We must continue to support our cause, a just cause. The truth shall set you free because knowledge is power.

A smoking ban DOES come in to place next year - just like the one here in the UK.
No, I'm not kidding.
Same as the current public buildings smoking ban in the 'Dam at the moment.
Coffeeshops will have to provide a seperate smoking area either out the back or on the roof.

But then again weed is still illegal - so let's see if it actually gets enforced ;)
I'm off there in April before this BS kicks-in

July eh, i've still got time to go before it starts. They say the ban only applies to tobacco =]
Still, it sounds like they're just gonna make a hotbox room lol and smoking on roofs is usually kool.

"Establishments will not in fact have to be completely smoke-free. Proprietors will be allowed to set up a separate room or glass partition behind which people can smoke"
Glass partition sounds cool..

I'm looking forward to not having to put up with people waving cigarettes in my face at work. As for the coffeeshops, so long as I can still buy my hash I don't care if I can't smoke it anywhere public.

at tokyo airport they had these wikid smoking areas, they where in the main building but they where squared off and seperated by massive walls of air blowing through from the floor to the ceiling, with a massive extraction fan in the roof and in alligh with the floor vents. It made like a self contained room. no smoke could get out and because of all the air you didnt smell at all. it was wikid.
they should just build those and im for them in the uk aswell. theres no physical way the smoke can get out and there damn cool to walk into.

No its not illegalized and it was never legal to begin with. In coffee shops you have to ask to see a menu and ask to see products now. Also the police cannot smoke when they get off work anymore. Its not illegal or becoming illegal just some laws are being passed to keep it decriminalized. I wouldn't call it laws just guidelines.

I used to think this too untill i found out what goes on in the love hotels, only a 1/3 of the couples go their to have sex?? Alot of Jappaness women think sex is a treat that happens every once and a while, this is just so illogical to me. If it is accepted to go pay for sex out side of marrige their, I dont see why everyone is not constantly getting down, technological advances are one thing but, if they are going to get addicted to sex machines, whats the point of having hotties?? I dont get it get down with a machine or a real girl, they machine would be cool to try but come on a -Real Girl-, hello

Well if there is a ban, thank god i went there last month to finally experience the place. I spent 5 excellent days cruising Amsterdam with 2 Australian travellers. I done nothing but take drugs and shag hot blonde prostitutes. I felt liberated.

nah... never. not amsterdam.
They cant illegalise it - it's already illegal. And they WONT criminalise it. We also know that we'll still be able to smoke - so whats the problem? There aint one!

Stupid French girl ruining it for everyone..
Shrooms > French girlIt's ridiculous isn't it. Alcohol kills thousands every year, yet the government keeps it legal. But one French tourist dies because of her own stupidity, and bye bye shrooms. The argument for banning them is completely flawed in so many ways.

I typed "amsterdam" and "cannabis" in google news.
Dutch police complain it is their right to smoke cannabis while off-duty | the Daily Mail (http://www.dailymail.co.uk/pages/live/articles/news/worldnews.html?in_article_id=502375&in_page_id=1811)
That's what I found. So it seems unlikely haha.

I was in Amsterdam Dec. '07 prior to Christmas. We went to MANY coffee shops and there was no talk of MJ becoming illegal at that time. You can't have it on the streets in Amsterdam, only in the coffe shops is what I experienced. What a vacation!! Schrooms were for sale then too. I rather stick with MJ.

Right, this was on the news a few months ago.
A young female tourist was killed after stepping in front of an electric tram after having consumed a potent fungi in historic downtown amsterdam. In response to this, lawmakers adjusted their lax drug policy to enforce a ban on said fungus. Many of the Dutch smoke herb, and their hobby is officially safe.
