quick question...

my bedroom's got a pretty high ceiling with a smoke alarm over the entrance about 20ft from my window... how much smoke will set it off? would I be fine tokin' out the window?

Cigarette and Cannabis smoke do not set off smoke alarms unless the smoke is very thick in the air or blown directly into the detector. Smoke alarms are designed to not go off from these types of smoke

what if the room was hot boxed?

hot boxing a room might do it, but it's still unlikely, because of the density you need to reach. The detector is looking for particles in the air larger than those in the smoke you're creating. In such a situation where you would be hotboxing anything, it is likely that you do not need to worry about someone being suspicious that the smoke detector was taken down, and so can just remove it temporarily. For that matter, covering them with socks works well too (I have the hard-wired 120V type in my trailer and they go off every time I use the oven). Assuming the alarm is in reach, just do your hotbox. If it goes off you can quickly cover it or take it down. You're supposed to play it safe with smoking since it's easy to start a real fire with the things you are smoking (butt falls out of an ashtray). So better not to defeat the alarm unless it actually does go off false. But in many years of smoking weed and tobacco, and with all the relatives over the years who smoke cigarettes, I've never heard of this type of smoke setting off an alarm.

if I take the batteries out of the smoke alarm, would that disable it? or how else could I render it ineffective just in case?

If you live with your parents fucking with the smoke detector isn't a good idea. If you live in a dorm or something, fucking with the smoke detector can be a serious (means expensive) offence. I know in my old dorm it was a $10,000 fine if you are caught tampering with a smoke detector. Just a thought.

Yeah. They dont detect cigarette/cannabis smoke. You're fine.
