Main advantage of SCROG!!!

What is the soul purpose of SCROG?I don't understand that much.I know that it's to focus on the top of the plant instead of the lower parts of it.However wouldn't you get more bud by letting all parts of the plant grow.Does it have to do with light penetration? thanks for any advice:D

From my understanding it has to do with light penetration, and concentrating the plant's growing energy to the top shoots. Also in SCROG the plant is typically topped/FIM'ed and/or trained (LST) to produce more bud sites. Another big reason for Scrog is to control the height of the plant for those who have limited vertical growing space. Also, scrog allows for less plants while still maximizing yield. The strains which are best for scrog are usually the bushier kinds. NorthernLights can be an example as one that comes to mind.
There are many good tutorials on the net to get a better handle on scrogging, just do a Google search.
