i am starting a hydro grow with a 4x8 flood tray its going to be awesome i cant list all the details yet but its going to be one high tech room i cant decide weather to use 2 1000watt hps or 3 600watt hps my concern is with yield.

I would go with 3 x 600. They have a better watt to lumen output, and the lumen output will be close to the 2 x 1000:thumbsup:

I'm in the same boat as you myself.I already own a 1000hps and was wondering if I should add a 600hps or a 1000hps.

it depends on the size of the area i was always a 1000 watt kind of guy all else aside ive had good luck and even better results with 1000 watters this is the first time i will be useing 600 watters. What are you looking to accomplish?

Funny I was kind of wondering about a similar lighting question.
I just got two 1000w hps ballasts & bulbs and I was wondering if I would need both of them or just one for a 4X9 room?

yea if you can afford air cool them and make sure you have a large enough fan to cool the lights

Three lamps are going to get you better yield for your eight foot grow area. Also, the 600W lights have a higher lumen per watt ratio, as has been said on this thread. The real trick is going to be if you air cool those lights, as has been mentioned as well. I can keep my 600W light 8 inches from my plant, and I feel I could go even closer if I wanted to push the envelope. Get yourself some real nice air cooled reflectors, as well as a high powered fan. One thing to note when you look for reflectors is that some reflectors have flanges on their sides, and some reflectors have flanges on the side and on the top. You'll probably want the reflectors with flanges on the sides, as this will make it easier to create one ducting system between your air cooled reflectors.

wow you really keep the lights close not much light loss there. so 3 600 will give a similar yield as 2 1000s in an 4x8 tray. i hope you guys are correct ill let you know in about three monthes keep an eye out for my grow log its gonna be a good one

Also one last nippet. If you haven't got reflectors yet I would check out some cool tubes. I have had nothing but awesome results and temps with them.
