anyone find themselves using wiki in place of google to figure out what things are?

like just say for example, someone mentioned something you'd never heard of before (northern lights for example) would you go to google or wiki (of the two obviously)?

just curious... lately i've found wiki is far more effecient in such tasks... i can enter just about any event, person or item into the search engine and in seconds be looking at the page devoted to that particular subject and in under a minute have a basic understanding of it... and if i still wish to learn more, there is plenty more to learn.

I think wiki is a GREAT thing, and a great idea. BUT, it's not always accurate, so that's it's only let down.

that's to be expected since people are who make up wiki.... you can rest assured tho, most of it as about as factual as it can get, information on there is constantly cross refrenced as much as it can possibly be (of course, things like supposed govt. conspiracies or ufo sightings can't always be cross refrenced lol)

but i do agree, it's main downfall is the fact that the information can't be taken 100% of the time as 100% correct....

:p i also like how it's branched off for things like gaming.... much more helpful for us gamers to view a wiki page to find what we want rather then hunt through pages upon pages of searches...

someday, i actually expect wiki to start printing their own books... not that it'd be some huge seller or anything.. but i'm sure there's quite a few collectors out there who would buy a peice of history like the complete collection of wiki lol...

/\/\/\ exactly the point i was going to raise, a fact is only as reliable as it source.

recently in the uk an old back bencher politician died. some people on wiki posted he wrote the song reach for the stars by s club seven.

this fact appeared in a few newspapers during his details of his life.

lol

Can't abandon google and it's my first choice. Wiki is notorious for being inaccurate and sometimes it info is just scratching the surface so to speak. It's not useless by any means but I use google.

If they could get the money I think they would print books. Wiki books would be excellent for students to use. The only thing is any information they used in the book from the website would have to be checked thoroughly, which is why I'm guessing they haven't done it.

If I want specific information on a subject I use Wiki. It's just to fast and reliable. On the other hand, when I'm looking for odd torrents (that I can't find on The Pirate Bay) or I'm looking for a specific website for it's utility I use google. Google is nicer if you want to have a broad spectrum of things relating to the subject at hand or you need to find a service on the net. Whereas Wiki is better for information on a specific subject.

As for Slip's comment about wiki making books, I just don't think they will ever make any. First off they just have far too much information to put into books. Second, why would they ever want to put it into books? It's much easier for a student to just search online for the subject as opposed to sorting through hundreds of books. And third, Wiki is great because it is always changing. Books would set it in stone and would be outdated within a month.

I hope that all makes sense.

i use wikipedia for everything. like there used to be time when i would sort of wonder about something but not be able to figure it out, but now with the internet it never happens. i just use wikipedia. i used to use gogole but it isnt nearly as concise. i dont know if anyone knows what i mean but like whenever something just comes up and kind of bugs you all day not being sure about it, hard to put into words, but with wikipedia it literally never happens any more to me. i just find it out. of course i dont use it as an in depth research tool. it is fairly easy to sort the bad info from the good on wiki as well

i perfectly understand, as it's what i use wiki for...

real life example? watching pirates of the carribean (2nd one) and hearing the word kraken, made me wonder what sorta actual history there is behind the dreaded sea creature... then later on... the flying dutchman...

i use wiki probably once a day atleast... it used to be i'd hear something (like, say 10 years ago) on tv or in a movie and i had no idea what that was, i had two options... 1 ask my grandma, she knew aloooooooooot.. kinda like one of those knowledge sponges... 2nd, just forget about it, somtimes it'd end up coming up again later on (often years) down the line and i'd finally learn... but now... as you said with the internet... i never wonder what something is for more than an hour....

Wiki's good for getting a basic overrun of a subject, but I still use google plenty to find sites that can really tackle the subject in-depth. Google Scholar is a great engine.
