Watering

Hi, i have 7 plants that are in vegetive grow and im watering them 200ML of water in 1 gal containers. Is this a good amount? im planning to water them 400Ml of water when they go into larger container for flowering. Does it really matter how much i water them? Thanks

what happens if you overwater??

if you overwater the plant wont get o2 in the roots.

i did that in my first grow. gave it too much in a pot with no drainage (ive learned) before a long weekened away.

next week i helplessly watched as the plant appeared underwater and the leaves drooped and fell off from the bottom to the top over a period of under a week

in my plants, water is applied every 2-3 days once the top 1/2 inch has become dry. however, this is going to vary by room conditions, plant size, and soil type.

wait till it becomes dry for the top .5-1 inch and then resaturate it.

oh ok, but my pot has draining holes, can i water it once a day? The room tempt is around 75 to 80F. It seems to be doing well in the 200ml a day, kind of alot of water comes out of the draining holes though.

If you can get a pot of the same size and fill it with soil. Feel how heavy it is dry and then slowly water it until water comes out the drains. This is a full saturated weight now you can use to compare.

Alternatively stick your finger into the soil to test how moist it is (an inch or 2 down, careful not to hurt any roots). If it is dry water, if not let it go another day.

Basically let them dry out between waterings, it will do you far more harm to over-water than underwater seeing how you can easily compensate for under-watering with more water.. it isn't so easy to take water out :(

What eggrole1 and klondike_bar said. Just from my own experience...do NOT water every day. If you water every day, one of two things is happening. One--You're watering with such a small amount of water that it isn't reaching all of the roots before it begin absorbed into the soil and drying out. That's bad. Two--you water so much that your roots can't take in soil nutrients because they're drowning from all the damn water. That's bad too.

The idea is to water enough so that you roots are able to absorb soil nutrients. As it becomes more difficult for roots to get at what's in the soil, they grow out in search of more. That's how you get good root growth. Really, watering every 2 or 3 (or even 4) days is enough, IMO. Just check your soil or pot weight.

even severe underwatering can be healed within 24h of getting water

overwatering however will almost GUARENTEE a slow wilty death over about a week that you can do nothing to help....trust me, it sucks

Water when your plant needs to be watered, not when someone recommends that you should water...

If the top inch or two of soil has become dry, and the pot feels light and airy, it's probably about time to rewater. If the plants start to wilt, and it's obvious that the soil is bone-dry, it's probably about time to rewater. Make sure you're watering enough to saturate the soil around the roots, but don't water so much that you're producing runoff all the time. Especially if you're flowering. Too much water during the end stages of flowering can promote a nasty bud-rot. It's better to keep the soil of flowering plants moderately dryer, in my experience, than it is to keep it constantly saturated.
