I have one quick question if anyone can answer this.
I am working on setting up a SCROG. Now I was going to use a 400 Watt HPS. But was wondering if a 250watt HPS would produce almost the same effect as the 400 watt.
I am using a cabinet that is 4Wx3Dx5H. with a total of 12 square feet and and a total of 60 cubic feet. The output of the light in question is 26,000 lumens.
I wanted to cut cost a little and still end up with around the same yield or close to it at least.

oh yeah and one more question. if i were to change the color of the lens of a bulb for instance does that change the spectrum at all. say a yellow spectrum bulb covered with a blue colored sheeth? not sure just seen some tubes and was curious.

The 400w is 50% weaker than what you need for an area that size. even with a good reflector you'll get air buds around the periphery.

oh so what wattage would you suggest then?
800 watt to 1000 watt? I am guessing.

20-50 watts per square foot, the more the better.

Forgot about that rule. Wow my heads gone today. yeah thanks for the reminder. I will calculate and figure out what is exactly needed.

ok so that is 600 watts of light for the 12 square feet I have planned at 50watts a foot. Ok I will just go with teh 1000 watt HPS then. might as well so I have the light when i need it.

thanks man. So say I did buy a 1000 watt though. How far from screen should it be?
i was figuring 1000 watt because I will upgrade again in the future (box wise) so why buy 2 when all I need is one.
so with a 1000 watt bulb it would run me around 83 watts per square foot.
or maybe I will just build a 6 x 3 x 5 instead that would be cost effective in the long run. Would be 18 square feet instead of 12. bigger scrog mean more buds.
thanks for the help. I think my head stright now.

A 1000w light will effectively light a 4'x4' area. However, if you get a reflector with a rectangular footprint, you can increase that to 4'x5'. I'm going to be buying some new lights within the next couple of weeks and I've decided on the Hydrofarm Daystar (http://www.hydrofarm.com/pb_detail.php?itemid=2008).
Just a little more info to rattle your brain. It just ain't right - having your head straight at this stage of the game. :D

Supposedly 600 watters are the most efficient lumen-per-watt wise, also I would get two 400w or two 600w instead of one 1000w because you never know what your future plans might be and when you want to seperate them say to flower one while another vegges you can do so. The only pitfall would be that two units might cost you a bit more. You can't put two different units in a grow room that small but think about it, you can flower and veg another at the same time. Peace :)

You can't grow in that size area with a 1000HPS, lol. Maybe bake a pizza in there with it... not grow plants.
In a cabinet, your 400 is about as big as you can go before running into heat issues. You WILL need an air-cooled reflector.
