I thought my 360 was immune to the red ring of death. I got it the month after it came out, and since then I hadn't had any problems, until today. Yesterday, I borrowed two games from my friend: Guitar Hero II (and controller) and Assassin's Creed. I spent hours yesterday and this morning smoking and beating Guitar Hero's carrer on hard, which I accomplished without incident (and had loads of fun with, while it lasted ).

So a couple hours later, I played a couple songs on expert, then turned my 360 off. 10 minutes later I returned to find it unresponsive, just giving me the infamous "red ring of death." I looked online to find that a recent GH patch has been linked to this, and as it's the only thing that's changed with my system, I believe it to be the cause. It's way out of it's 3-month warrenty, so things aren't looking too good. To make it even worse, I never even got to play Assassin's Creed, I was actually opening the disc tray to put it in when the console informed me of its demise. I play Halo 3 a lot, so this is gonna be really hard for me... Thank god I have lots of weed right now.

wow, that sucks man.. you probly wont have to replace the whole thing though, might just be the motherboard... You ever play Oblivion?

Yeah, I got COD and Oblivion when I got my 360. I'm probobly going to try some of the low-risk fixes posted online for the ring of death, but I will probobly end up sending it in for repair, which is very expensive, regardless of what the problem is.

actually, I was just told on the xbox forum that they extended it to 3 years for the red ring only, so I won't have to dish out that $100+ to have it fixed, but I'm still gonna be out of an xbox for a good long while. PS3 lovers, take your shots.

What they'll do is Microsoft will charge you to fix it, then they'll pay you back in a few MONTHS later. This happened to 2 of my friends recently. Luckily when ours got the red lights we sold it on ebay (we even said it was broke and the seal was gone) and we got 180 bucks. Then we bought a new one.

ouch i now the feeling of the red ring of death. had it a few months ago. was trying to play some NCAA 08 and my screen was freezing and locking up. ended up fixing it myself since my warranty is no good from modding it. did the X-clamp mod, fan shroud mod and case cutting. it works even better now and runs alot cooler than before. still gonna do more modding next time i flash my drive firmware, to make it run even cooler by adding heatsinks to the rams and a couple pc fans inside.

good luck with your 360 and stay irie

i boguht a used xbox 360 and got the Red ring of death 2 days later when i first popped halo3 in...

To everyone that got the Red Ring of death:
we are covered by a free 3 year warranty specifically for the Red ring... the red ring of death is 3 out of the 4 lights around the power button turn red (the missing light is the top right section)...

now my experience with microsoft was pretty nice... i got the red ring and i called it in because i couldnt register the serial# under my name online because it was under someone else... i didnt know the name of who i bought it from... they didnt seem to care and ended up putting it under my name... so call it in tell them u got the 3 red lights and they will ask u a million times for recording purposes and they will send u an empty box through UPS... mine took a week to get to me... they prepay for the whole package so you get free shipping both ways... pack it up and take it to the nearest UPS store... it took a day for my xbox to get back to the microsoft repair center that is here in texas... so it might vary for yall who are in different states i lucked out on that... after they get it they wont have any info on your xbox repair for like 10 days but by the time the 10 days was up and i was gonna call in... they had already sent me a refurbished xbox in place of my old xbox... so they basically did no repairs and just took another week or so to send me a refuirbished xbox...

sorry for typing so much im studying for a test, I'm ADHD and im on my adderol hahaha oops

so dont feel bad about the xbox least its a free repair... + u get a free month xbox live

EDIT:
irie u fixed your own xbox? thats hardcore dude... super genius haha... yeah i think they will tell u if they notice u tampered with the xbox then the warranty is void and they will charge like 100 bucks or something

my old year warranty was expired but i still got the special warranty for the RRD here is hte link if anyone wants to see the apology letter from microsoft Letter (http://www.xbox.com/en-GB/support/petermooreletter.htm)

I had almost the exact same thing bought used from ebay a year later the red ring of death however it was a full month before they sent me my new 360 and 1 month xbox live but if you have any skins or anything on it remove it first if you want to try to reuse it bc if you send it to them it's gone.

Well considering the first Xbox was awesome, and set a standard in console design. Then the 360 has the best current gen library in gaming at the moment by leaps and bounds. Plus the fact that Microsoft repairs this problem for free (something Sony didn't do for there craptacular PS2s)

I have more faith in Microsoft than I would place with Sony for a future console.

got mine on ebay too. bet your all thankful for that extended warrant huh. anyone else modded their xbox360 to play backups?? pretty easy mod if you got the stuff and then you can get any game you wish. so far i have around 60+ games and only 2 originals LOL. the mod is a custom dvd drive firmware that enables your drive to read backups in case you didnt know, though you can get banned from live playing backups its usually due to the backup not being properly stealth patched.

good luck with all the rrod
