So the wife has decided to have a Thanksgiving party, and I need some kind of convincing/believable explanation of why there's a padlock on one of our closets, with visible vent covers at head and feet level, and a slight humming noise coming from inside...

Here's one I thought of: We found black mold in the closet, and the Inspector said we have to pad-lock it so no one is accidentally exposed, and we have to run a de-humidifier 24/7 inside the closet with ventilation (hence the vents and humming).

This will undoubtedly put a damper on the party, probably causing some of the guests to leave early out of fear for their lives. :D Which is not necessarily a bad thing. :smokin:

Any other suggestions?

You keep your valuables in the closest (a safe and computer equipment)? Tell them about recent thefts in the neighborhood and they should make sure they locked there cars real good. :)

Tell them its your pc cabinet. Swing some story about it being for work, but its a super computer so it needs venting and your boss told you to keep it locked unless you're working with it. Strict security measures. My friends dad has one of those. Its called an Itanium system

It's a place to keep your valuables.

For the humming noise, say you have a dehumidifier in there to keep the moisture level low because of your valuable electronics.

It'll work. :rasta:

well they probably wont ask out of courtesy in the first place but if they do just brush it off with some excuse about central heating system or something and chane subject or say its termites or some kind of bugs so the area has to be sealed off and the air treated and extracted...depending on how gullable they are

Thanks for the suggestions. I think I will go with the "valuables" story, and the de-humidifier if asked about the humming and vents. My father-in-law is pretty nosy. Hopefully he won't ask to see how I have it set up!

Both excellent suggestions. Especially since plenty of people are BORED by work/computer talk. The mold might lead to too much shock and you'd end up having to explain stuff.

Or say it's the heating systems for your apartment and the landlord locked it so tenants wouldn't tamper with the thermostat- that's my best suggestion. Grumble about the landlord not trusting anyone blah blah blah and turn the conversation to other peoples' landlords.

Oh... and unplug the humming stuff while company is there!

i'd def unplug the humming stuff if its loud enough to hear when theres an akward silence in the room. computer fans are a safe bet though

Get a tropical fish tank. The sound will mask the humming of the closet nicely.
