Im getting this 250 watt hps system that comes with a mh bulb and hps bulb off ebay, I was reading the description and it said that this would be best used in a 3 x 3 area. I have some left over drywall from remodeling my bedroom, I was thinking of building a 3 x 3 box and painting the inside of it white. Im planning if I can to have a couple small plant's, im gonna split the box so it has a veg room and a flower room leaving 18 inches of width, and 3ft for height. Would I get anything good outta this or should I upgrade to a bigger box and light? I could go with a 400 watt hps and make the box bigger. Should I build two 3 x 3 box's or stick with just 1. Im trying to get the most out of it if possible, any suggestion's?

I would shoot for the 600watt. They have the highest amount of light output per watt than either the larger or smaller sizes (i.e.: 250, 400, 1000, etc.). For a new grower, you could expect up to about .5g per watt in good conditions, maybe 2-300g for the 600.

I don't really have the fund's for the 600 watt system that's why I was thinkin about 250 watt.

I think youll do fine with a 250 for the small ammount of space! i would get a fluorescent veg room tho, they work the best (for me)!!! Anyways, I think 250 is fine because u r having 36''x18"x36'' for each room...
For the 4.5ft flowering room your building, with the 250 watt hps you would get 7333 lumens per sq. foot. Thats fine in my opinion... I have gotten good crops with less lumens definately! Anyways, good luck! I'm too high for this...

Just a thought-

That 400 hps will be a nice little flower light- you could save a bunch of work by knocking together a 4x4 space to flower in, and then set up a seperate little flourescent lit veg space- light it with just bout anything, and hell... veg could be a cardboard box- doesn't even have to be light tight, from the plants point of view.

But if you're going to do veg & flower spaces, you gotta have two differant light sources- two differant photoperiods.

And flower has to be dark ( really dark, like processing film without a safelight dark) for 12 hours a day.

I was always under the impression it had to be light tight from the beginning.

Same here, I plan on making everything light tight so no suspicion's(sp?) will come up about havin two grow box's in my room. I've talked to my parent's turned out they actually use to grow them selve's and are willin to lend me some advice. My dad build's house's for a livin so he's gonna build my box's for me and he's pretty good with electrical work so I think im set.
