I'm just wondering how much everyone cleans out their peices and what method they use because nothing annoys me more than smoking from a nasty peice. I clean my bowl atleast once a week if not more, usually its when I get a new 8th every few days. I clean my bong every session unless I know I'm gonna use it agian soon. To clean my peices I use rubbing alcohol and salt then I rinse with steaming hot tap water.

i clean my pipe after every use... i usually just put it in a jar with 1/2 isopropyl alcohol and half water and then rinse it when im ready to hit it... but if any build up occurs then i use a q tip to clean out the resin
if it is a really dirty piece i boil it and scrape it with q tips

Yo guys i hardly ever clean my piece. I just let the resin build up then get resin hits. But that will only clean the resin out of the bowl. When the resin builds up inside so much that it is harder to hit it will take a while, then you can boil it. That will clean it pretty good.

smokin resin is for lamers, I clean mine bout every 2 weeks or so. depends I have several pieces in the rotation so one might not get used for a bit. I used to boil my pipes but the old lady got pissed the whole house smelled like weed,so I just use alcohol and salt now,it actually doesnt take very long maybe 15 mins at most to get em all cleaned up.

when i clean my bong or bubbler i use the same method as you do (rubbing alcohol and salt) and i clean it the next day before i smoke again.

I personally like the "dirtier" high resin gives from time to time, so if i've been smokin alot let the resin build up till my pipe is nice and dark and Violet (my pipes name) has really become violet. Thats when i give that dirty girl a good cleaning ^^. Usually goto down with rubbing alcohol, salt and pipe cleaners...as id never ever want to boil glass as thats just asking to break a piece.

why would boiling glass be just asking to break a piece...?

It depends on how much weed I have. If I know that I'm going to be conserving a quarter or something, I'll try to use my pipe everytime I smoke, and let the resin build up, so that I can scrape and smoke it to make my wait until my next bag a little more tolerable.
When I decide to clean it, I scrape the resin off, and smoke it. And then after I decide that the rest of the filth is in the stem, I'll either boil it or put it in some really hot water and let it soak. After I think everything is loosened up enough, I let the nasty brown liquid drain out and then let it dry on a towel. Usually dries within like 5-10 minutes, and then I use it again :).

I never boil my bowls anymore because the heat makes them really brittle and easy to shatter. I used to break every bowl I droped when I would boil them but now that I use rubbing alcohol I can drop my bowls and not even worry.

So rubbing alcohol is the way to go? I've got this amazing bubbler I bought when I was living in NYC a few years ago and went through considerable effort to get it back to Detroit...but it's SO dirty right now. Since I'm about to start using it again in a few weeks when probo is over, I need to give it a big "fall/winter cleaning".
Are the products that headshops sell worth buying? I've seen a few brands of liquids that claim to break up resin. And personally, I've never liked resin hits. Like a cleaner high.
i clean mine after everytime i use it, not a huge fan of res.

so if you want to clean with rubbing alcohol and salt you just mix em together and let the piece soak in it for a little while??????

I usually fold a note card in half and then use it to pour salt into the bowls mouth peice and then I fill it roughly half way with rubbing alcohol then hold all the holes closed with my fingers and shake, rinse, and if needed repeat. Usually gets my bowls clean as the day I bought them... I also think somewhere on here there is a picture tutorial but I'm too lazy to find it right now.

yeah you dont even need to use the salt really, it just acts as a light scrubbing agent to help get the resin off.

if you dont like the idea of salt you can also use rubbing alcohol and rice! the alcohol breaks up the resins bond too the glass and the salt/rice acts as an abrasive to clear away the resin.

not much...i think the heat or whatever from a lighter/match kills any germs, and id rather not have it soaking in alcohol or any other abrasive chemicals...
plus, i do (sadly) end up smoking resin now and again...
my bong and pipe surprisingly dont get that dirty, or that much resin built up in them...dunno why. I find that organic weed produces much less resin than "hydro" or stuff grown with a lot of weird fertilizers. Maybe cuz those have a lot of excess cellulose and shit, because they are all beefed up to be big heavy buds.

Yeah that is weird how organics dont make as much resin, I had an ounce of some organic and I only had to clean my bowl 3-4 times compared to 1-3 per quarter or some of mt regular stuff. But they had less kief so maybe thats where the resin comes from.

Boiling glass is just asking to break your piece because it causes the molecules of the glass to expand and contract more rapidly then they normally would.
this causes the glass to become more brittle or can out right make it shatter if you cool it down TOO fast.
Need an example? pull a light bulb outta a socket thats been on for a while (be sure to use a cloth or something so you dont burn yourself) then run some cold water over it and watch it shatter.

yeah, just think, if it has that great of effect on the amount of gunk build up in your piece, maybe it really is worthwhile to pay the price of organic stuff for your health. It must mean less gunk in your lungs too...

depends on many different factors. if its my favorite piece that i dont use as often then ill clean it after every use. if its my everyday bubbler or bowl ill clean it after prob 5 uses
