View Full Version : Enjoying my first Hydro grow ...

so far, anyway ... had a couple early pH scares ... but, overall, the plants have done as good as expected, and a clone taken directly from the mother to the other hydro-pot, seems to be doing just fine ... lots of helpful info both from reading the Forums, and friends here ... thanks  ... I am enjoying this, after soil over and over, it's kinda cool to 'go back to school' to learn new stuff, makes it interesting again ... ...

yup, had two plants in soil for about 6 weeks, terribly stunted from light-bleaching ... the one was male, and has since disappeared :wtf: ... I took a cutting from the mother on the right, and planted it in the newly-empty pot ... strains differ, but mine doesn't seem to mind the changes one bit ... when I pulled the male from the pot, he already had good white roots growing after only 4 days in the hydroton ...

This is probably a good idea. I notice that when I put my babies in the clay pellets, wherever the leaves touch the hydroton they burn and die. I think this will happen if there is any nutrients in your system. I start them at 1/4 strength, and even that is enough to leave nutrients on the individual pellets. Even when they look dry there is usually a slight bit of moisture in them, and I think the new leaves just can't handle being in constant contact.
Thanks for the compliment.

yeah, I have a clear bowl I occasionally put over it, was off for photo ... I purposely let it get soaking wet frequently, etc., and the clone is in full-strength nutes, too (I know this is 'wrong', it's a 'stress-test') ... I am 'stress-testing' to determine stability in my own personal hybrid (anytime I have a plant that's not growing 100%, I 'experimentally' abuse it, to learn more about it) ... if pro breeders did more of that, I think you'd see a lot less genetic weaknesses ... so far, nothing seems to be damaging to her, she is handling all the mistreatment I can 'accidentally' commit (she must have found out she is a WEED) ... I absolutely don't pretend to be a pro breeder, but I am a firm believer in strong stable genetics (must be from growing up around all that Illinois corn ) ... 'only the strong survive' :D ...

you're absolutely correct, water on leaves magnifies and burns plants ... now, if I could just figure out why 5 days of soaked leaves, and full-strength nutes, didn't screw her up any worse, than what they did :wtf: ... I'm guessing they 'got a pass' this time, because I backed my lamp off so far (at 28" now, lowered it a few inches today, and will put the dome back over the clone) ... after my light-bleaching scare, I've backed off the lighting distance, maybe too much ...

I'm using the included General Hydroponics 3-part nutrients, Cal-Mag+, dab of molasses, and added a little Earth Juice 'Catalyst' for some organic activity ... I wasn't expecting the light-bleaching, I'm so used to using fluoro-tubes just barely above the canopy ... I bought the 400-watt setup, and have just been getting closer and closer ... :D ... didn't catch on to what was happening until it was too late, the seedlings were white as printer paper, and stunted for weeks ... that hydro plant in the pic is 7 weeks from seed ! :wtf: ... I should toss her, and start over with my 5 new seedlings , but she fought so hard, and is showing so much promise, she is getting a break ... I wish I had room to maintain her as a mother, she has shown outstanding stress resistance and heavy pre-flowering ... :smokin:

Because your light was back. I am a big fan of pulling your lights back in the beginning for several reasons. For one, the closer your light is to your plants, the more right on your PH and nutrients must be. If I put fresh clones under my 600W HPS, or even my 400 MH, I make sure the light is a few feet back to start.

i took a cutting well really it was growing into my lights so i did'nt really care so i cut it back to clear the lights and i had some nutes i had from a nute change at 1500ppm and i just droped it in there i had abunch of hydroton in the bucket tooso i just droped it in there and it did'nt burn wilt nothin after about 4 days it had roots and was growin great with no probs at all i thought to myself man nobody really knows how this shit works i mean for the most part but now i think a plant will do what it wants to do as it's built into it's dna so to speak to adapt and survive or atleast some times then and thats not the only one that has done that i've done alot of thinks people say u should never do and the plant just keeps on going and going so who knows

it has nothin to do with lights, when the leafs stay wet from layin on the hydroton, or whatever u have it in and it stays wet it gets over saturated, and pretty much drowns the leaf. as it's not gettin any air to it ive had plants just in the window in a setup like he has with the drip, and in just plain water and it still happens with hardly anylight. let alone under mh or hps so thats my guess iv'e ruled out light, heat nutes so only thing i could think is it's just to wet and can't breath, as if it was a light factor u would see lil burnt spots, where the water was not the whole leaf dying all the way to the stalk just my 2c

:wtf: an update ... I pulled the clone out of the hydroton yesterday, as one of my new seedlings was looking better ... out of curiosity, I tore open the rapidrooter plug ... the clone had no roots at all ... zero, zilch, it never even tried to root ... I can understand that OK, but the damned thing 'looked' fine ... it looked just like the day I put it in there (which is why I replaced it) some sort of suspended animation, I guess :D ... regardless, I found out I can't always be lucky , and luck has always been my 'ace in the hole' ...

Yeah, I completely understand. I've had the same thing happen before, so I always make sure the babes have a nice amout of roots started before placing them in the hydroton. It saves me the frustration of an uneven growth rate and canopy, kinda like my growth bubbler (I transition the cuttings from the rockwool cubes to the clay pebbles under CFL for a week or two) which seats six babes but has been taken over by two and the other four are fighting for light...

little update: ... I vegged my 'Daddys Girl' for exactly 8 weeks, and switched to my 12/12 flowering cycle 7 days ago ... I'm getting the pH settled, getting more predictable for me, now, and the GH nutes seem to be doing fine ... my temps are great, but my humidity is high ... that will be fixed when I install my new vent (courtesy of xcrispi, thank you  ) ... I FIM'd her after the 5th internodes, and she responded with 3 growing tips, my 3-headed monster :wtf: ... in short, I am surprised at the rapid growth, it is even better than I would have suspected ... if this plant hadn't been light-bleached as a seedling, and almost died, I might be afraid to open the cabinet door ;) ... the CFL in the photo is one of those odor-neutralizing bulbs, red-spectrum, and they work well ... thanks for everyone's help, I'd be lost without it ...

 very glad to hear from you Bluebear, ANY comments or criticism are very welcome, as you grow her out ... she is approximately 50% Cinderella99, 25% Northern Lights and 25% G-13 ... I have only grown her indoors so far ... 8 weeks from seed on 18/6, and 50 days at 12/12, she finished with about 10% amber trichomes ... pretty medium feeder, but she does like a shot of magnesium, I just dose the water with 10ml CalMag+ per gallon of RO water, seems to be about right ... mine grew about 48" tall, untopped, and 40" topped ... very short internodes (in soil, anyway, she got quite gangly in hydro, don't understand why) and dense branching, the NL really shows herself in the bushiness ... taking numerous cuttings for clones, heat, etc., all failed to phase her, she seems unconcerned about abuse or stress ... with 10% amber trichs, she is very trippy, will make the most depressed people giggle like schoolgirls, lol ... gives me body rushes, similar to chemicals from days gone past (side effect: makes me real horny :wtf:) ... a very pleasant-smelling strain, she smells like lemons, grapefruits, pineapples, just not much like pot ... VERY good female/male ratio ... one thing that really impressed me, was it gave me NO munchies ... I couldn't even make myself eat, but a buddy said it gave him the munchies bad ... tossup ... she is a medium yielder, is VERY easy to manicure, (pic attached of the very first Daddy's Girl, the one I learned to love, lol :hippy:)... she liked molasses this current grow, too ... good luck with her, I'm anxious to hear crticisms and suggestions, been working with her about 2 years now ...

'Momma' was a Joey Weed 'NL99' ... 'Daddy' was a now-unavailable Motarebel 'Killa Queen 2006', and I used a peculiar pheno that had lots of 'sparkly' flower clusters appeared, only 1 of 5 looked like that, so I took a chance, and picked him over the others ... the only male I have gotten from these Daddys Girls still carried that aforementioned trait with them, so, I got lucky again :D ... theoretically, this hybrid should probably be around 50% Cinderella99, 25% G-13, and 25% Northern Lights ... by this Spring, I will back-cross further, I still have 5 of the Motarebel seeds left, and lots of DG seeds to play with (I almost ran out of smoke for myself, from devoting the last couple crops to 'seedcrops', trying to develop this) ... future plans may introduce some of the original Shantibaba 'White Widow' into the mix, giving us 'White Girls' :D ... pic is of the 'Daddy' as he was growing ... if anybody ever winds up with one of these plants, I encourage you to share cuttings, etc ... I'm 'old-school', pot should be given away, it shouldn't have to always be about $$$... ENJOY !

day 38 of the hydro 'Daddys Girl' ... she has what seems to be a magnesium deficiency, but harvest is about 2 weeks away, so I'm not too concerned ... possibly, the light-bleaching is occuring again, since I've run out of room, but nothing I can do about that ... next grow I'll flip to flower earlier, I prolonged it this time, because of light-bleaching ... we live and learn ... P.S., thats all one, topped plant, except for the short frosty girl in the bottom right corner ... she was abandoned outside (an extra), but felt sorry for her, brought her back in, absolutely gooey :D

well, for the record, harvest is only two weeks away, probably, and the soil DGs are totally frosted, while the huge hydro plant is mostly just foliage, great for salads, but I'm none too happy with the hydro plant, so far ... the hydro plant is much larger, grew much faster, but only because the stems are so stretched :wtf: ... DG does NOT do that in soil, puzzling to me ... will know more next grow, as I continue with my Daddys Girl program ... :smokin:

nothing really wrong, just different ... all the numbers have been right all along ... she went thru a real bad couple weeks of light-bleaching when she was young ... I'd never encountered that before, took me awhile to figure it out ... so, perhaps that just delayed her a bit, or light-stressed her enough to elongate, thats possible, too ... no biggie, we'll know in couple weeks

our fellow grower, Treetops, pointed out a discrepancy, his sharp eyes caught something I missed  ... despite my earlier searches for anything named 'Daddy's Girl', it seems someone has already used that name for their African-sativa hybrid (NO genetic similarity to mine)...
since there's already too much confusion regarding strain-names, and they were 'first', I am trying to find out if my second-choice name, "Sky Pilot" has also been previously used, so I can 'officially' re-name her ... so far, I have found no such references ... but, if anyone finds a reference to a 'Sky Pilot' strain-name, please reply here ... I always liked 'Sky Pilot' as a name, it reflects well on her effects :stoned: ... my thanks for your patience, and your assistance ... :smokin:

after polling my friends that are growing her out, I pretty much have to stick with 'Daddy's Girl' name, after all ... my apologies if I took someone's name, but its kinda 'too late' to change it now ... I tried very hard to find someone else using the same name, and couldn't, until just a few days ago ... so, if I get 'called out' on her, I'll challenge him to a 'smoke-off', Winner keeps the name, and I'll even give him some Free seeds :D ...

to avoid further confusion, I'm going to backcross her again soon, and have already picked out a different name for her progeny ... we're currently doing searches to verify her uniqueness, before adapting a new name ... hate playing a 'name game', but in this day of 'cute marketing names', we have no choice, I want to stay ethical ... (I know, I worry about the little shit too much) ... my present strain is Daddy's girl, and will remain Daddys Girl ...

Can totaly understand your ethical attitude there Reaper as yet don't know even really what you mean by backcross but no doubt it will be interestng. I have recently read elsewhere that there is a seed growers forum highbred.net. I imagine if its any use you probably know about it but it was from TY that I saw it refered to as a source for seed research.
Maybe for now you could try what Ltd companies do when they want to use similar names Daddy's Girl (Your growing name). Good luck with the development I look forward to being able to get the seeds some time.

I will cross one my Daddy's Girl F1 females with her P1 'Daddy' ... that usually results in further stabilization, with less variance, although I have seen zero variance in them, so far, anyway  ... my lack of growing space makes a lot of growing steps difficult, if not impossible ... that's why I asked friends to try growing her, makes for a broader view of her likes, dislikes ... now, if I could just find a woman as steady and tolerant as my Daddys Girl (and can make me feel as good :D) ...

I just had communications with the owner of Kiwi Seeds, who released a Daddy's Girl strain before 'mine' was bred ... he is quite a gentleman, and responded to my inquiries almost immediately, a good sign for a breeder, these days ... ... my version of Daddys Girl is going to be back-crossed once again, and the name changed for her progeny (Kiwi was very gracious, could care less about my un-intentional 'copying' of the name) ... btw, Kiwi Seeds just won a HTCC for one of his other strains  ... The guys at Kiwi Seeds are pretty cool was meant to go in & have a chat with them about the Canna stuff I use as they have used & been an official agent for a while. The Alegria Haze was really nice very tasty in the vapourizer, but didn't get to try the Tasman Haze which got a second in the Sativa as that was part of the Why Times celeb a$$ kissing party only as a seed company entry.
Personally I thought too many were chasing after a version of a Haze cross.
I'll defnitely be going into to have a chat with the grow guy I was speaking to at the Kiwi Seeds booth when I am back in Amsterdam.

yeah, it was a huge relief when xcrispi questioned my day-count, and I found the 'culprit' when I went back thru my logs ... normally, DG will be showing 5%-10% amber trichomes at 50 days ... that's usually when I harvest
That is awesome. I usually start flushing my hydro when I see 10% amber to end up with a nice balanced high without the total couchlock. I haven't been able to get it down to less than 60 days but I'm happy to see that others can....

I can give a smoke report now, I've grown her before :D ... she is roughly a 50/50 hybrid, but her effects are much more sativa-leaning ... harvested with about 10% amber trichs or less, results in a non-paranoia high buzz, very visual and psychedelic ... impossible to be depressed with her, she is a real 'grinner' :D ... no drowsiness or lethargy  ... she gives me no munchies, at all, but a couple friends did get ravenous ... I get body 'rushes' from her, very stimulating stuff ... outstanding for sex, no kidding, very sensual, tactile ...

harvested my first hydro-plant today  ... as expected, some major differences, soil vs hydroponic ... Positives: improved growth and better yield  ... Negatives: time-consuming daily 'chores', her pleasant 'citrus-floral' aroma is more of a 'sour cough-syrup' smell now :wtf:, and I had humidity problems for entire trailer :( ... she also took 2 additional weeks to finish, 64 days instead of the usual 50 ... (but that may also be because of low (50-60) grow-room temps this time around, I won't lay all the blame on the hydro) ... regardless, my next grow will also be hydro ... I am now adding a 3rd solution reservoir, (recirculating), to minimize maintenance, and hopefully allow me to leave home for 2-3 days at a time ... photos are of the single plant's yield, trimmed, manicured, but not dried ... molasses made an obvious difference, the buds are HEAVY, gooey, and DENSE ... luckily for me, she also must be very resistant to mold, as my humidity was 95% with lights OFF, and still 60% with lights ON, door open :wtf: ... it's no secret, my plants and I survive on 'Luck' :D ... thanks again to Xcrispi, StinkyAttic, Treetops, Weedhound, and local friends for the help, I'd have been lost without ya  ... further proof that 'newbie' growers can have excellent results, if they just READ the Forum posts, and disseminate the growing knowledge already here ... I strongly recommend going back thru all the old pages of Cultivation info, as most questions have already been answered, repeatedly ... good luck, and goodbye, folks

Opie, so sorry I left you and some other folks without special THANKS !! ... just like the Academy Awards, the thank-you's just go on and on :D ... btw, I love that bubble-cloner design you turned me onto  ... gosh, yield would have to be double, anyway, would be even more than that, if I had the room ... I'm confident a 'full-size' plant could easily be grown indoors with sufficient space, in hydro ... I let her go too large in veg-stage, and then fought to hold her down, the entire grow ... next time, I predict my 'vegging' period will be 4 weeks or less, instead of my usual '8-weeks vegging' in soil ... and, I suspect the extra 2 weeks flowering may be due to the unusually cool temps ... one interesting note, she still had NO yellowing bottom leaves, even by harvest time ... my best guess, is that the hydro didn't hinder nutrient uptake like the final days of soil grows ... ???, just a guess ... time-wise, hydro only adds 10 minutes a day to my usual growing efforts, EXCEPT, I have to be here for it ... soil lets me go camping, etc for 3-4 days at a time ... hopefully, the addition of 3-4 more gallons of reservoir capacity, plus the existing 4 gallons, will allow me to go play in the woods with Bigfoot this Spring (hey, she gets lonely, too ;)) ...

Congrats on making it thru your 1st hydro! Room temps (IMHO) had a great deal to do with it. Also an inexpensive res. heater (Wally World, less than 10 bucks) will help a lot too if the res goes below 65 F makes a huge difference. I hope you still hang here, if not let me know where you end up.... Again, CONGRATS!!!!
