BEIJING - China's quality control watchdog confirmed Saturday that popular bead toys recently recalled in the U.S. contained toxic substances.

The toys - marketed as Aqua Dots and Aqua Beads - had been a top Christmas seller at Wal-Mart and Toys "R" Us.

Two children in the U.S. and three in Australia have been hospitalized for seizures and comas after swallowing the sticky pellets.

U.S. safety officials recalled about 4.2 million of the toys last week for possibly containing a "date rape" drug.

China's General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine said the toys were manufactured by the Wangqi Product Factory in China's southern city of Shenzhen. China froze exports of the toys Friday and yesterday the government suspended the toymaker's export license.

U.S. consumer officials said the bead toys contain a chemical - 1,4 butanediol - that turns into gamma-hydroxybutyric acid, commonly known as GHB, when ingested. Also called liquid ecstasy, GHB is a sedative used by both club kids and date rapists.

I agree, at a minimum at least until they fix all of these major life threatening shortcuts and problems, we can't keep stopping these product one at a time after children and families lives have been so negatively effected by products that have gone beyond inferior to straight up dangerous to handle let alone children play with. I can not comprehend how we can continue to ignore this and see it on a case by case basis not as the whole picture that china does not hold themselves to the same standards causing dangerous and deadly situations that constantly center around our childrens lives.
Stand up for our children and do not buy these potentaly deadly toys and products from china that are children are playing with, putting in there mouths, and risking there health to play with a toy that already outsources American jobs to save a few cents at wal-mart, is it really worth it.

This is Wal-crap. Leave our children alone!

Toys-R-Crap.

I wonder what other attempts are being made to poison the youth.

MTV has to be in on it.

I think china is just trying to ruin our youth so that we will have a generation of people that cannot defend themselves. Then we will be the united states of china.

Its GHB and it used to be legal. You could buy it at GNC. I forget the name but it started with an R.

I think we know WHY the pellets were a top seller...

My daughter asked me, amid all these toy recalls, "Does China hate us?", and she is only 8. If she can see it then I have difficulty understanding why top government officials can not? I agree, this is an issue that Americans will continue to have on their quest for a bargain.

And she wanted some Aqua-Dots for Christmas too, so I guess I should just tell her Santa's evil elves contaminated them all.
