quick question,i use cfl's with my hps light during vegetive growth(cos my cfls are blue and my hps is blue/red blue blue red= nice bushy growth).when plants are flowering they need more of the red spectrum so is there any point of having the cfls on?(i ask cos there all on timers and i cant be bothered unwireing the lights!).cheers y'all

if you can afford the electricity, leave them on ... I have always found best results come from imitating nature ... although the early-Fall sun is at a different angle to the earth, emphasizing red-wave light, it is still providing the full spectrum at all times ... no worries :smokin:

If there is room lower your cfls between plants to encourage lower limb bud development.

hey sponge thats exactly how they are,i have em like this cos i messed up my germ dates so i had the cfls over the small plants to protect them from the hps until they got bigger, turned out they loved it so i left em,and like you said the lower parts got bushy and bloomed as well.
so are you saying when i switch to 12/12 i'll get buds lower down the plant with the cfls left on down there?

I have one desk lamp that's fitted with three mogul socket extenders, and four 100W equivalent CFL's. It's parked right in-between all of the pots, only about 1.5' off the ground, and really helps to provide light to all of the side-branches under the canopy...where even my 1000W HID can't illuminate very well. It's a good method, and it works.

I have never regretted putting a light down low. It always results in increased lower branch development!

I have lots of CFL under-canopy lighting, I actually have one branch that is growing DOWN towards the cfl, and at it's other end it is growing UP towards the HPS. it's a beautiful thing, i should take photos of it.
