View Full Version : What's the best way to stop telemarketers?

Lately I've been getting excessive telemarketing calls to my house, and from the same people! I checked my call display and it's from somewhere in Michegan, and I live in British Columbia (Canada). I get calls 2-3 times every single day, and I can't tell them to put me on a don't-call list because it's just an automated message. Argh, it's so annoying, picking up the phone 3 times a day to "Congradulations! You've won a free 5 day trip to the Florida..."

So.... do I direct terrorists to their headquarters with stories of Korans being used as toilet paper? How on Earth do I stop these bastards?

Hmmm well, if its an auto message like you said I suppose you could listen to the whole thing and see if they leave a number. I mean you would think they would. And if they do you could call and ask for them to take you off their list.

But what I like to do (for real people who call) is blow a whistle. It really hurts the ears.

I see Canada doesn't really have a "No Call Listing" like they do in the states. Try punching in numbers when they call.....I did that once a few years back and actually got someone on the line. Seems it screwed with their system when I did that. LOL

Have a good one!

Don't stop them, it's the opportunity of a life time!
err, I mean in the UK we have something called TPS (Telemarket Preference Service). If a number is registered TPS it's illegal for telemarketing calls to be made to it.
You probably have something very similar in Canada and the U.S, it's just not many people know about services like that because they aren't advertised and companys won't reffer people to it as it's losing buissiness for the industry.
Look into it for your area, i'm sure you will find a reputable phone company providing a block for telemarket calls (In the UK it's "B.T" [British Telecoms]).

...and i've had someone blow whistles down the phone and most are of poor disturbance level. Rape alarms are where it's at.

Get on the do not call list if you have one in your state that is one good way if possible

What you need to do is repeatedly tap "0" on the phone when the message is being played. If that doesn't work I would try and get the number.

What you need to do, my friend, is sell THEM something...or atleast TRY to:D

I've had many issues with telemarketers in the past, and the best way to get rid of them is to pick an object in view, and try to sell it to them! Last week alone, I ALMOST moved a bag of potatoes, a Leann Rhymes CD and used kitty litter box (litter not included). Kinda funny, I havent heard from 2/3 of those companies ALL WEEK!

That "Do Not Call" list works good here in the states. But I don't know what to tell you. I used to say,"Could you hold on a minute"? Put them on hold, then go back to whatever I was doing. Some people have said that was mean. I don't think so, I figured, "Fuck 'em".

I once had a real problem with a marketer that kept calling after we asked them not to anymore, I found out the number of the place they were calling from and recorded a message and called them and played it. went some thing like "dear valued customer thank you for your purchase of (in automated sounding voice) 100 copies of Anal Adventures 3..." they never called again

I always wanted an airhorn for this, but i suppose it doesn't work on machines, but if you think gettin calls from michigan in canada is bad, i've had calls from florida before and i aint even on the same continent! :what:

Using a SIT signal (beeps that signify a line is out of service) at the beginning of an answering machine message helps stop the automated dialers (some anyways). Not the most pleasing sound though.

Personally I like to sexually harrass them, it makes me laugh when I ask a female telemarketer how old she was when she lost her cherry or if she would like to come over and get close to me for an hour or so.
It is fun to catch that Indian woman off guard with a question about her clitoris or if her labia is the size of mud flaps on a Peterbuilt?

Screw with them. Like spider said, harass them anyway you can - LOVE the Peterbilt reference - you work on the big trucks?

Ive since canceled my home phone and now only have a cell, which doesnt get telemarketers nearly as much. But what I like to do if you have time is just go along with it as long as possible most of the time you dont have to say much as they have huge scripts they have to read from. Then at the last minutes just say nevermind. Or you can do some pretty funny things with sound boards of celebrities.
Arnold-Kindergarden Cop: "Who is your daddy, and what does he do?"
But thats all of course if u get to talk to someone real.

HAHA, I love Rebgril's and Firetheft's ideas. Unfortunately these can only be saved for the occasional human telemarketer, these are all automated messages.

I think I'm gonna do a bit of research and see if there's some authority in America I can report them to.

I had the same problem for about a month on my cell. YOu can ask them to put you on there do not call list and if they call back after you get $500. Tons of stuff on the web about it.

As I said, there's nobody to tell because it's an automated message.
Also Canada doesn't have the do-not-call list, but they're working a bill through parliament as we speak.

HAHA spider I do the same shit cept Instead with billcollectors. I got like a grand in debt and 3 different bill collectors call almost everyday. First I told them all to stop calling. didnt work. Then I told them I moved and didnt live there. didnt work. Now I just dont answer, or I fuck with them. Loud screams, burping, gay sexual advances, give them random numbers to reach me, at where I "moved". Fun.
