sorry about the bad news ... be sure to install the new lamp with clean gloves, if possible, and wipe your fingerprints when done ... oil from your fingerprints become excessively hot, and will crack the lamp ...

So you think its the lamp? Why would it burn out so quick? Those things are like 80 bucks, do you think they would warranty it?

Its digital... digital greenhouse from HTG, i dont know anymore than that.. the ballast seems to run, but the lamp never lights up.. could it be the fixture?.. if I had a voltage meter I could check.

have you tried unpluging it for 5 min then plug back in, this will reset it. sounds like your ballast took a surg.

Nope, tried that.. couple times.

The ballast runs and sounds normal.. the light just never comes on at all.. got no idea.. its really stressin' me.. Im low on cash at the momesnt.. looks like a lost all my plants. :(

just saw something DON'T PUT A VOLTMETER IN THE LIGHT SOCKET YOU WILL FRY IT!!!!!

it is to high a voltage for it to handel.

My voltage meter handles up to 240

ok I got mine from htgsupply they do have a one year warrentee so call them first thing in the morning. they may 0vernight a new one to you. hope you saved the recipt though it states clearly you need it for warrentee isueses.

I just saw that your meter will handel 240v, a hps ballast puts out a voltage in the 1000's if your meteris protected it will pop the fuse. if not it will fry your meter.

I bet your bulb got fucked somehow.....bummer.....it's not switchable ballast is it?

Sounds like a bulb problem, did you install it with gloves on and/or wipe it clean from the oil smudges / fingerprints when you installed it?

Jerry Garcia 2007

unfortunatly I am almost positively sure it is his ballast. It is very rare a bulb goes that quick. If the bulb was damaged or cracked it would have exploded.

Anybody got a UL certified digital ballast?

Jerry Garcia 2007
11-01-2007, 02:16 AM
You had to make me look!

Now you got me f'in scared there is no UL rating on mine and I got it from the same place.

Now I got to smoke 0ne and prey.

From what I have read...there are no UL Certified Digital Ballasts....yet.

I would like to know the heat and air flow conditions that the ballast was in, I do know they do not take heat well.

greenhorngrower
11-01-2007, 07:32 AM
No heat at all.. room stays around 70-75 degrees.. wall mounted and the surface of the ballast was barely warm of the time.. i was suprised at how cool the thing ran..

I'm stumped, sounds like it could have been the ballast.. now I'm nervous.. i dont want it to happen again after i replace it.. could it have been because it was on a timer? I had it hooked from a 120v/ 1750 watt timer into a surge protector that the ballast was plugged into.. so its unlikely to have been a surge.. the timer wasnt heavy duty, but according to the statistics, it should have been sufficient enough to use with the light.

Jerry Garcia 2007

I doubt very much it was your timer, it is rated at 15amps and you are well below that.

The only thing I can suggest is to call HTG explain what happened, but I would tell them I am a rare orchid breeder and if you do not get a new ballast by tomarrow morning, you will stand to lose your crop or at least severly damage it. My gut feeling is they will do there best to help you. They do not need the negitive plublicity so it is in there best intrest to help you.

let us now how it turns out,

Also they give a one year warrentee on the ballast so I doubt they are trying to sell crap. With electronics occasionally stuff like this happens, so hopefully you unfortunatlly you got the one bad apple in the bushel. I have the same ballast bought around the same time.

I just talked talked to the people at htg and they claim that its my bulb. They say that the bulb they sent doesnt match well with my specific ballast, the bulb was a generic "growbright".. they are sending me a brand name bulb.. hope it works.

Great
I hope they are right.
Did they charge you for the bulb?
Now I wonder if I should get a spare bulb for mine. I am currently using the MH bulb that came with it, but they also sent the same HPS bulb as you have.
Please let me know if that solves the problem!!

CLEAN your fingerprints from the new bulb, it WILL cause it to fail RAPIDLY ... probably why it failed in the first place ... good luck

and, right now, I'm using a 400-watt 'cheapo' $8 HPS, it works just fine ( Light bulbs, Rope Lights, Halogen and Fluorescent bulb - 1000-Bulbs - The Light Bulb Superstore (http://www.1000bulbs.com) )

no, thats not why it failed... im not that incompetent, i never touched the bulb with my hands even when I took it out of the package... although on the package it stated that you could touch the bulb without any problems... the guy at htg said that they have had similar problems with those bulbs matched with my ballast..

So what did you do? Refund? Warranty?

What kind of HPS was it?

So, did you ask the guy why they don't warn people before selling them that bulb with that ballast? Maybe it's just me, but it seems pretty stupid to sell something that they know is going to have a high failure rate. :wtf:

Yeah well, as long as the new bulb is covered.. I wont complain.. I'm not sure when they discovered that its a faulty system.

I just hope this will fix the problem and I wont have to worry about it. If not, I'll just have the whole thing replaced.

That link rocks!

With a quick glance it looks like they have everything you would need to build a 400w HPS setup for under 100 bucks... crazy... I never thought to assemble my own ballast. Hells yah.

I think HTGSupply is just busy.

They are always prompt with everything, which is always nice, but haste makes waste.

They sent me my Cooltube on top of my other products and it arrived broken. It saved space and time, but it was pointless, they had to send me another one. Completely free of course though.

What I'm saying is that, whether it's running fine without problems is not the case. It was whether or not it was UL listed or Certified. You can have ballasts piled up in the corner that are,nt worth a crap, but are UL Listed or Certified. Don't take me wrong on this. This was an old post that I had responded to opie yutts.Nice job on the free second bulb.
