This may be a "nooby" question...but what is the best way to keep your herb as fresh as possible. I'm buying a half oz of orange kush tomorrow and I want to stay as fresh as possible (for obvious reasons). If you have any advice on how to keep it fresh, please inform me.

Thanks.

This is what I do, I had 3.5 ounces stored like this in mid June and have been slowly smoking it. It is sill quite fresh:

You need:
-Glass Mason Jar w/ screw on cap.
-Sandwitch Bag (medium sized plasic bag)
-An Orange
-Pin
-A peice of paper towel

You do:
1.Fold the paper towel so that it lines the bottom of the jar.
2.Poke a bunch of pin holes in your plasic baggie. (Ziplock brand actually makes bags with small holes in them.)
3.Peel your orange.
4.Rinse then dry (MAKE SURE THEY ARE DRY) your orange peels then place them in your fridge for a bit.
5.Eat the orange.
6.Pull the dry orange peels outa the fridge wipe them down with paper towel and put them in your holy plasic baggie.
7. Fold it up nicely and put it in the bottom of the glass jar (on top of the paper towel)
8. Put your ganja in the jar.
9. Screw on the top.
10. Put in the fridge.

Hopefully you have your own fridge and dont live with your parents, otherwise this is all a waste.

Glass Mason jars always work for folks I know.If its not cured when you get it just crack it open a few minutes each day.

I've had good results with simply double bagging the main stash and keeping it in a dark place, while keeping a separate bag for a little bit that you pull out maybe once every few days from the main stash... That way the main bulk of your stuff stays out of contact with air and light and should stay pretty good!

Oh, sorry. Let me, um. Sorry. Erm.

I was doing it without peels. The original post was simply about how to keep herb fresh. I was replying to that by saying you don't really *need* to play with humidity and flavor-infusion to keep stuff fresh... :food10:

To keep it fresh indefinitely, the best bet is buy a vacuum bagging machine. It sucks all the air out of the baggie and seals it. Then you keep your main supply in the freezer. Air, heat, and light degrades the weed. Every month take out one month's supply and keep it in a baggie that you squeeze the air out of after you open and close it and store it in a cool place, best is the fridge.

Hey Bud,thats great advice, the only thing I would be worried about is any moisture or condensation that is in the bud would be pulled to the surface by the extreme temps in the freezer. If you have had success with this method, good for ya.This is a difference of opinion that my partner and I have often.I have been hesitant to put even vacuum sealed bags in the freezer for fear that it would pull the moisture out of the buds with the temps and then youd have problems.I keep mine in mason jars in the fridge, takes up a lot of space but it seems to work pretty well.Take care,be well and most of all be safe.:)

just start buying jelly in a jar then stash it in the glass jar, they are perfect for storing your precious buds, the glass doesn't absorb the thc or anything and they seal completely so thats gonna keep it as fresh as you can keep it.

Id suggest breaking it up into small portions (1-3 grams) and putting them in individual pill bottles. That way , if youre carrying it on you, you dont have your whole stash at one time. And it will stay fresh for a long time in anything air tite...adding the orange peels/refrigeration can only help.

pill bottles are one of the worst ways to keep weed fresh a) they are not air tight Air will dry your pot out. b)they are plastic. Plastic absorbs thc, so don't use regular sandwich baggies either. Only Use Glass Jars! Also, DO NOT use an orange, or anything citrus for that matter. The acidity of the fruit will transfer to the weed via the oils in the peel, thus lessening the overall amount of thc. If you have large amounts(1lb or more) to be stored it is only acceptable to use plastic bags specifically designed for a vacuum sealer for no more than 30 days with no sunlight. But it is best to invest in the largest mason jars that are available and break up the lb into 4 large jars. If you want a pocket sized glass jar they are quite easy to find especially on line or even at walmart they have small spice jars that work for $.97

Please be advised that I am only referring to quality herb, not brickweed or mid grades, only the best. Brickweed and mids have such a LOW level of thc anyway that glass isn't worth it, plastic will do..

I had a couple ounces when I posted this n i needed to include the eating the oranges part. I hate oranges but I made my non weed smoking girlfriend buy me them when I wanted to store my ganj so i had to eat them infront of her, save the peels, put them in the fridge n wait till like... 2 am when she was asleap to do all this. I know, Its sad.

To keep it fresh ALL you need to do is store it in a dark airtight container, and make sure there is no moisture. Treat it like a cure. Well, really, it is a cure.

Theres no need what so ever to refridgerate, or freeze weed.

Is it true that plastic soaks up the THC? That seems strange. I know plastics are made from oil, but aren't the polymer chains resistant to making new chemical bonds? It seems like a relatively inert substance, but then again, I'm not an organic chemist. Is anyone else? If so, answer?

I actually found the best way to store weed is in your lungs hahaha. Just smoked a joint and a few bowls out of my bong...im pretty baked haha. On a serious note though, thanks for all the tips! It made my half oz stay fresh for the week i had it haha.

After reading this thread, I switched one batch from a plastic container to a glass one. My previous batch had gone stale quickly and I assume it was due to the plastic container (I had always poo-pooed the storage idea before this experience). We'll see if this helps.

Still would like a chemical explanation of anyone can offer one.

Those baggies are never completely air tight [lots of tiny tiny tiny tiny holes]

I always keep my weed in a mason jar even if its just an 8th. It keeps it a lot fresher than a bag will and I've gotten some weed before with a weird cure and keeping it a jar actually made it smoke and taste a little better.

use a tobacco humidifier there cheap and they work pretty good and to dry the bud back out yo roll it just leave it out the jars for a few minutes.
look at the thread "moist bud" Keep on :rasta:

I wonder what Ask Ed would say about long-term storage of weed?

I think the only problem with freezing it is if it's not totally dried out. If there is any water left in it, freezing will destroy your weed. I dry my fresh harvest for one week in a cool dark dry place and that seems to be long enough. I've been smoking the same shit I grew in 2001, that I kept in my freezer in plastic baggies with the air sqeezed out. It seems to have lost very little potency in 6 years.
