My grow box is 3' x 4' and I have both a 400w hps and a 1000w MH. I need to know which one would be best to use or should I use the 1000w just for the veg and the 400HPS to bud. or can I just use the 1000w from start to finish? If I get more air flow I may try to use both but that seems like a lot for a box this size. that would put me to almost 120 watts per square foot. THANKS

Hello,

The first thing that come to my mind as far as the 1000 watter goes, is that it could pose a serious fire hazzard in a small area.

As long as your ventilation is proper and up to snuff, then I would probably go for the 1000 for veg and flower, just watch for heat/fire issues.

Hope this helps.

Peace

If you have money to spend, but a 1000w hps conersion bulb. They are expensive but make a huge difference in bud production, or buy an agrosun mh bulb, it has more of the light spectrum for flowering

Fire and heat are not that big of a risk. I thought of that before I built this box.

that is something I will definitely look into. Thanks guys. ;)

as a rule of thumb MH for veg growth and HPS for flowering is preferable, although you can use either for both flowering and veg.
I have a 250w mh in a cabinet 18"x36"x72" for veg and a 250w hps for flowering also in a cabinet. I can only fit 3 buckets in there so 250 is perfect and I get great yields. :D

well I'm going with the 1000w MH and I am looking into getting a conversion bulb. I think that would be the best way for me to go

Howdy Bender,

Can one use a conversion bulb without a switch-able ballast ? I have a 1k mh and would like to have a better spectrum for flowering..have ya got a link to a website that has the conversion bulbs ?

Have a good one...Torog

Hi Torog

I have found a few places on line that sells them. they cost about $170 for the bulb. this site has a little bit of info on them. .specialty-lights. (http://www.specialty-lights.com/10015.html)

Hey good luck bender, 1000watts should be more than enough. I've never used a conversion bulb, keep us posted on how it works for you.

Hey torog, What part of Texas are you from? I'm a little north up here in god's country  :D Most hydro shops carry the conversion bulbs also.

Howdy Bender,

Thanx for the link ! It was very interesting and I would not have believed it-if I hadn't of seen it...lol. I reckon that the thing to do,is to have one of them conversion bulbs handy, when a feller goes to starting the flower photoperiod. But dang..they sure are proud of that bulb ! It's expensive !

Have a good one...Torog :D

HPS 1000w work the best over all deep penatrating light bigger buds dense buds. Also good for seedlings, and veg state good vent and blower are a must

A switchable ballast is just that, you can switch from MH to HPS bulb, just flip the switch and change out the light. A HPS conversion light would go with a MH ballast, and vice versa. In the long run the switchable is more cost effective cause conversion bulbs are more expensive and don't last as long, they also aren't as efficient. But switchable ballasts are sometimes expensive.

I've seen folks use HPS for the whole grow and they look fine. They run a little cooler than MH, but in an enclosed box of that size it'll have to be air cooled and maybe you'll need 2 fans an intake and an exhaust. If it gets too hot the plants will die, try to keep it around 75-80 degrees. I'd say the 1000 is overkill, a 400 or 600 would be just right, cheaper to run, easier to cool, a 600 will be 50 watts per sq ft, which is what most reccomend. everything has to be in balance, amount of CO2 available, light, water, nutes. Just make sure you can handle the temps someway.
