Keeping the bud at optimal freshness?

Just bought a new bag of green - its pretty fresh and spongy.
Do I want the bud dry or spongy?
What do I have to do to keep it at optimal freshness?

There are all kinds of threads about this already, but..

You could double bag, or find an airtight container (prescription bottle, film canister, baby food jar, mason jar, etc), and some people put it in a chilled environment (refrigerator or freezer). It's mostly a preference thing from person to person, it seems.
