View Full Version : "Attention Whores" ...... women, men, or what?
OK folks, there's this guy on the radio out here - Tom Lykis - who likes to go on and on about how women crave men's attention and will do just about anything to be the center of a conversation, the center of attention, or whatever else you wanna call it.
He calls it being "Attention Whores"...
Since this radio show is nationally syndicated and broadcasts in many markets nationwide and some/many people may have heard it, I'm wondering what your opinions are on the subject.
Generally speaking, do you feel it is true?
Why or what drives this kind of behavior?
Are Men attention whores in their own way?
Is this a natural phenomenon or just radio chatter?

I know of some. One girl here acknowledges it and kind of revels in it. Some might do it to alleviate boredom, like when they're left alone all night.

Men and women both, especially in terms of belligerence and contempt toward others just to sale themselves.
It's unfortunate but I guess that's our current nature.

Yeah, i know how that goes. I ain't even married & the samething happens to me. I'll be working on my car & at the time girlfriend (ex now) would sit there beside me asking me a million things trying to get me to talk to her. I got a one track mind & i can't work on my car & talk to her at the same time, so i'd get pissed, hurt her feelings, then have to tell her i'm sorry.

You may resent it, but realistically that's how it is. I don't believe it's fair for a person to put down others' credibility for the sake of promoting one's own image. That's where conflict, contempt, and hostility begins.
Last time I checked we wanted to be better than that, but from what I've seen throughout my life in other people, maybe we don't have that power yet.

I don't see any problem receiving attention from your(personal)whore from time to time! Ha!Ha!

Hmmmm, that seems possible. I'm trying to understand why some people *crave* attention and will do just about anything to get it.
So can someone more wise, experienced, and in tune here help me figure this out, that would be cool. Possible guesses:
Did they get weaned off Momma's milk and put on a bottle too soon?
Did Daddy ignore them or treat them badly so they are constantly 'begging' for approval and attention?
Is it taught by society to act that way to get more out of life?
Is it related to brain chemical function or indicative of a mental condition ?
Is it caused by celebrities acting as bad examples such as Paris, Lindsay Lohan, etc?
These are my guesses, but they are just that -- guesses. Anyone that has knowledge or opinions please share them...
My girlfriend does it occasionally and when I asked her why, she said something like "It's a defense mechanism"... WTF does that mean? Help me here people, I just don't get it........

wierd i was talking to my bf about this on sunday. i am a attention whore because of daddy issues. mine was always working ...which i respect because he was a good provider, but it hurt because growing up i could jump up and down dye m hair purple and my dad wouldnt notice. so now i have serious relationship problems bc i find myself attracted to guys who are like my dad -over worked and dont have time for me.- becuase when they do pay attention to me i feel like i have accomplished something. i find that its sometimes really pathetic the way i try and get attention. sex is a big one. then there is me always trying to look how i think they want me to. which is sad because i shouldnt have to change myself for attention but i find i get a new woredrob everytime i get a new man. sad right?
the whole attention thing is causing a lot of problems in my current relationship because he has been too busy for me lately and its making me really upset.

Man, I don't resent nothin'. I was making a joke. There's a lot of attention whores here. It's just the way it is and I certainly don't see that as any problem. Most entertainers will tell you they got in the business for the attention. I don't think most of them have some psychological problem that causes it. It's just human nature.

LOL! Perhaps I should clarify. I in no way meant to imply that I am in the habit of swinging cats about. What I meant to say is that I have been known to be something of an attention whore myself from time to time. I'm not proud of it, but it is what it is. I try to recognize it, analyze my motives, and work on the real issue that's causing it. Other times I don't give a damn.

Well as long as the cats don't mind, who cares! J/K, I just don't understand it and as many people do who are curious, I am trying to learn from others' experiences.
Now, back to 311!

haha ive used this phrase for a long time but not in quite the same context.... my definition is a man or woman who will do anything for attention.. not just for the sake of getting attention from the opposite sex.
....now thats a true attention whore!
we have all attention whored at some point im sure. its not something we like to admit, but we do it.
but..... in my opinion, the most annoying people are story toppers. i cant stand those people, no matter what it is you say, they have a story about it, and it will be the most grand story you have ever heard. ugh drives me nuts, i have a friend who does it, and oh god i just want to make her eat a dirty sock.
