my friend has just placed 5 cuttings of his plants that he doesn't know the sex of under a 12/12 light cycle, he was wondering if these cuttings were left to there own devices would they eventually produce seeds, presuming there are males and females?

to determine the sex of the plants in his veg room as early as possible to free up valuable space (as the plants were grown from non-feminised seeds)

If you put the plant under 12/12 and back into veg it is going to stress the plant. Best thing to do is just wait under 18/6. It may be a few weeks but you avoid stress to the plant.

the answer to your first question is yes...The 12/12 light cycle will flower the cuttings, but you're looking at at least 3 week until you MIGHT be able to sex them "properly"...
Assuming that the cuttings root (and live). Obviously there has to be males and females (well... all females are ok too, as long as you can get them to hermie). You can't really "leave them to their own devices" either. If you want a good amount of seeds that will produce worthy offspring, you have to take care of these plants and this room as well as you do any other.
