I recommend the cheap litmus paper test strips, available at most drug stores, or the simple liquid test kits ... :smokin:

ive started using liquid test but too time consuming and can only read the ph as good as your eyes can see the color
but ill definatly keep liquid test for backup and to check every once in awhile
to me $50 for a truncheon style isnt bad if i have no problems for years to come

let us know how it holds up, over time ... that's good accuracy, and fast, for just $50 (I'll have to go out collecting cans on the side of the road, to buy one, though ) ...

i cant remember who it was but someone on here made a video demostrating how to do a soil runoff test and used that one, a probe type and the paper strips (i think). You will like the electronic ones much better, your not gonna have that mess from the drops, or the guess on the paper colors and the drop colors also. This will be more instant and right on where you need it to be.
now go get yourself a ppm tester ;)

the strips I use are lab-quality, I just collect runoff in a cup, drop a strip in , and look at it 5 minutes later ... its very easy to read, the colors stand out well , and as for the 5-10 minutes involved, it aint like I'm too busy :D ... I see the electronic ones need periodical replacement of their sensors ... more $$$ ... I'll stick with my 20th-century strips ... I grow in soil, so I don't do a lot of frequent testing ... if hydro, I expect I'd go electronic ...

LOL i almost made a post with the same exact question and PH meter on ebay. good thing i read around before posting. I emailed the seller asking about its brand and reliability just to be sure before buying. Im a soil grower but have some PH problems with my water so im in need of a good meter. hopefully it aint a cheapo knockoff that breaks quickly.
should i go and pick up this meter too? whats the good and bad about it?

so far so good
everything has been working
the only bad thing i have found is it takes the 6.86 calibration solution instead of 7.01 and the local hydro store only has 7.01
so i got some ordered and should have in the middle of the week
but i have the 4.01 and the storage solution already

got my 6.86 solution in. it came in 25 29ml packs, which i like more than the bottles of ph, seems to get more uses per dollar
at first i thought i was havin a problem cause the 7.01 solution i had was reading 7.3, so i emailed the company and they told me to email them the reading of everything after using the 6.86 solution, and the 6.86 and the 4.01 read correctly. so we are thinking the 7.01 solution could be off
i calibrated everything and so far seems to be working fast and accuratly, and also checked with the liquid test drops too

well i got all my ph needed items, but i have a small prob now. it seems that i can calibrate fine with the 4.01 solution but with 6.89 and 7.01 i get readings of 5.4-5.5. I emailed the sellers with a few questions so hopefully i get some replies soon. maybe i need some of that powdered 6.89 instead of the liquid. i cant even get a 7 calibration now, and i need to test some water for feedings since my girls are in 12/12. AHHHH what to do what to do.
time for a smoke break and think things through

Did you get the same meter? Or did you get a digital one?
In order to properly calibrate a pen you must keep it in the solution (first time) for 2 hours. Then adjust with the mini screw driver. Is your adjustable?

yeah we got the same meter. in the instructions it only says to use a freshly decanted solution of 6.89 or 4.01 to calibrate. i let my solutions sit for a few hours to decant then slowly poured some solution to calibrate. but i always get 5.4-5.5 with the 6.89 solution. dont know if the 2 hour style will work with this type of meter since it locks on to the PH level when done. no adjustment screw or anything i could find. guess im stuck on this for a bit til i can get it calibrated correctly.
