Hi all

As you can tell from my flag I live in England. Dont get me wrong I love it because I am English, but even I can admit it isnt the best place on earth. I live in a town that has a population of about 4,000, the nearest big place has about 50,000 and that is 20 miles from me.

Ive been thinking about moving away for 1-2 years to see something different. I would like to go to Canada for a year and then the US for a year (or visa versa).

Can anyone recommend places I could go to? I know I would like to got to Vancouver (been there before) and New York. Whats your opinion?

Erm how old are you and how much do you have saved up im guessing you live on your own at the moment the thing is you cant just "legally" decide where you want to live you know that right?

Dean, I think Cannabis was trying to point out that you may face some immigration and/or work permit hurdles. They can be overcome here in the U.S., but you usually need an employer to sponsor you in this country so you can get the proper work visa. I'm not sure how those things work between the U.K. and Canada, and it may well be easier there. It's just something you will need to look into and plan around.

Yeah thanks for explaining what I meant properly basically I think you have to get a visa so that you can stay in the country or something like that and for someone to sponsor you lots of paperwork involved and can also take a very long time to get it all processed.

Im 20 and I dont live on my own. Thanks for the info though. To be honest im not sure about getting working visas for the US, but I know its is fairly easy to get a 1 year working visa to go to Canada, my sister worked there 2 years ago.

Cannabis Campbell - I know you cant just decide to pack your bags and live in a country for X amount of years, but that isnt what I want to do. I only want a working Visa (1 year) which I know is a lot easier than applying for residency. I have around £2000. Btw, can you recommend any good places in England I could move to.

Yeah its always good for the experience I was going to move away to spain for 6 months - 1 year just to work there not really for the money but mainly for a chance and for the experience and obviously for the sun, sand, sea, sangria and sex haha.

Good places in england to move to.. liverpool, birmingham.. where abouts in the uk are you at now??

I was just reading about US working Visa, and you were right that you do need to find a job before you go there (sponser). I hope they havnt changed the rules for Canada or I am screwed.

I went to sixth form with the intention of going to university, but in the end never went due to a long illness. I have little work experience and it seems that not many people in England want to give me a chance with any decent job, so what chance have I got in America. I know I am able to do well I just need a break.

a work visa 2 years ago and now is completely different. If you want to move to Vancouver, be prepared to pay 1k+ a month on rent alone on a tiny, dingy place. Same goes with all of Alberta. I think you would be better off in the States somewhere. In fact, the government is urging people not to come here unless you have a place to stay secured.

This aint sounding too good. Maybe I should just think of moving somewhere else in England. It seem likes America and Canada have the right idea about letting people in there country, but England will let anyone in and give them money to sponge off our economy.

If you want to move to Canada, you could always look at a smaller community. Red Deer is a smaller community smack between two larger cities. The rent/property is cheap, and its a bout 1.5hrs north to Edmonton, and 1.5 hrs south to Calgary. All three communities have excellent bud, as alot comes from BC.

Well, typically the employers that will sponsor people here in the U.S. are those for degreed professionals. Engineers and technical types. Physicans. Researchers. Journalists. Teachers and academicians. I'm sure there are others, but these are the ones I've heard of most frequently. The reason regular hourly wage type employers don't sponsor people from other countries for lower-wage jobs is because we have plenty of non-degreed workers ourselves who should rightly get first crack at those jobs, and typically employers who don't pay a good bit of money aren't going to subsidize someone's international move anyway. Likewise, people who don't make a good salary aren't usually thinking about moving around the world to work anyway. Then, of course, we have plenty of illegal immigrants competing for our less high-paying jobs as well.

Your best bet in coming here, Dean, would be to see about coming over here on a student visa to study someplace in the U.S. Can you revisit that plan?

I've been to England once, as a child. I remember trying to get the guards at Buckingham Palace to laugh to even move. lol
My ancestors hail from England. Colchester, Cornwall.

my grand grand grand...etc..was Lord Mayor of London in 1650.

Welcome to England! Heres £3,000 because you're foreign. Luxurious housing and benefits also await, aslong as you weren't born here!

Hey CC gad to see you back.

Why can't other countries be like the UK you just have to get off the plane or boat and your in, its as easy as that ask 1 million eastern Europeans.
Straight onto our benefits system and free healthcare you also get housing, an interpreter and a free lawyer to ensure you get all your human rights, can't be bad.

Yeah, all these Polish are begining to piss me off. I used to work with a bunch of them. All they do is come here to get 4x the pay they do in Poland then send the money back home, what good is that for our country. When I worked with them they would hardly ever say hello to you and then say they couldnt understand me because "I had a strange accent", and they were speaking Polish in England!!! Grrrr. Im sure there are plenty others who dont work though and just get freebies, the goverment likes handing them out if your not English.
