You-tube has been on the news a lot now being the biggest video website on the internet making billions apparently, I can see how websites like eBay make money because of all the transactions going on every single day and people exchanging money and then eBay getting like 4% from each deal it all adds up.

But I dont see how you-tube or even other websites like google make money because you dont pay any money to join them or take up all that space for the video at all so how are they doing it??

If a web site generates a lot of traffic they can make a lot of money through advertisements.

And google has made an absolute shit-ton of money with its google ads software. Instead of having to place specific ads on websites, any website with google ads gets advertisements put on its site based on words and phrases that appear there.

It helps that Google owns YouTube as well. Otherwise it all comes down to their advertisements and companies that pay them to use their service for their videos, a lot of record companies have deals with them and put up music videos and such. And there are said to be some companies that pay them to search and destroy their copywritten works but I doubt that one, the company could just say take it down or be sued.

And for the record by the time Ebay is through with you, they earn almost 15% because they charge 5% or so after the auction plus 3% for everything over 100 or something near that number and they also own PayPal which also gets a cut of every auction if you use their service. It's rediculous, I sold a Wii for 360 and walked away with around 300 after ebay, paypal and postal charges.

would they only get money if people used the link and went ahead with whatever they are selling / offering. Or do they pay a set price for having the advertisment up on the website ?!?!

A set price for the advertisement on their website. After all it's all about facetime on many websites, newspapers, and magazines.

According to dnScoop - Domain Name Value, History, Stats Tool and Forums (http://www.dnscoop.com/), google is worth just under $1.5 billion.

To give some perspective, cannabis.com is worth $68,150

If they made it members only they would lose millions of potential customers. Open to everyone they reach a much larger audience.

Google bought Youtube in the winter of 06 for $1.65 billion in stock.

Newscorp bought the parent company of Myspace for $580 million like the spring of 06 I believe.

I didnt say members only I said maybe like a membership you can choose to pay for like with hotmail, or this website at one time where you could pay to become a member and have additional features.

If they make changes they would probably lose people to other sites offering the same thing for free, after all why pay when someone is giving it away ?

Most internet sites are making money from advertisements. Either per unique view, a set fee, or sale of their product thought that specific advertisement.
Companys out there want people to know what they do, with millions of people on YouTube/Myspace daily/weekly, that's a wide audience market worth big bucks. Any site getting mass traffic is worth alot of monies.

How often to people click on ads? I might do it just for the site hits but rarely am I attracted to anything after seeing an ad on the internet. Ads are annoying. It'd be bs if this site was to ever close though.

Yeah probably not very often but some people do and if its advertised on a site like you-tube then some of the ads are bound to interest someone.

It's about product placement , if you think of certain things then certain names automaticaly spring to mind (computers / microsoft).
I worked for a company that makes paint and was very well known and respected (Sikkens) they were bought by Akzo Nobel.
They realised that changing the logo on the tins to Akzo would lose them customers (people going "who the fuck are Akzo?) so they just added the name and gradualy the Sikkens name was made smaller and the Akzo name made larger so people would accept that Akzo was Sikkens, after a few years they removed the Sikkens name altogether.
Power of Brand names.

I used to dabble with websites and I would put ads for this one dating site on my websites.

I would make these goofy greeting card things that ppl could send to other ppl....viral marketing at its best.

Every greeting card that got sent had my ads on it at the top or bottom.

I made a few grand doing that. Every month, the dating site would send me checks for the traffic I sent them...in US$.

About 2% of my visitors would click on an ad. Each click would pay me 5-10 cents each. If the person signed up for the free membership, I would get another dollar. If they signed up with a credit card, I would get 50% of the sale.

I gave it all up when I decided to go and live on my sailboat for a few years. Now that I'm landlocked again with a steady internet connection, I might get back into it. But it wil be harder as there is way more competition for your clicks now.
