Because I have had my anti-virus software tell me three times today and ONLY on this site that it has detected and got rid of a virus called "Downloader." Anyone else had this issue at all? It's starting to freak me out.....:wtf: Should I do anything about it or?

yesterday, and today, when opening Cannabis.com, my Webroot Spy Sweeper blocked three attempts to load a 'spyware' , it appeared to be a relatively harmless, generic 'tracker', but 'Downloader' is a virus that can be quite bad, depending on which variation it is ... :smokin:

most Trojan Downloader programs are just pests that will slow down your computer after awhile, but I had one abut a year ago, that required my complete system re-install ... my programs could 'find' it, but couldn't 'remove' it, neither could Microsoft's tools ... :(

I would suspect it is tied to one of the animated advertisements, the usual culprit ... :smokin:

I just got the message. Avast gave me a warning about a Trojan Horse type virus called 'downloader'.
Anyone who does not have killbox should get it BTW...

There was a post in the grow section today, don't remember what it was about, but it had links to a couple of files to download and unzip to view an MP3.
Did anyone who is getting the warnings happen to download any of those files?

And are you guys running Firefox? I'm running firefox but haven't had an anti-virus open in MONTHS since I don't download like I used to and I don't surf weird parts of the net.
Never thought I'd get it from cannabis.com, and I'm not sure if I have. The past couple of days, my computer has been running extra hard. Damn...I bet I got a virus.

It was kind of odd PC because I wasn't downloading anything at the times that it happened....merely surfing and it was several different threads from different people.....which may mean nothing.... :wtf:
PS...I run Norton btw, and SpySweeper.

But don't worry, we'll get around to makin' it cuddly one of these days... :D
Hey, are folks who are seeing this running w/ javascript enabled?

Ive been very lucky about stuff like that. I run my virus scan at least once a week. I think the last problem I had with viruses was a stupid trojan.

I hope this isn't true. I don't like the idea of Sundance allowing spyware on the site. Not only that I don't like the idea of trackers storing data about me regarding illegal drugs.

PharmaCan, can you link that download?
There should NOT be any files with the extension .exe linked on here!!!
It may not even have anything to do with any advertisers- in fact, I expect that the banners are MUCH more closely monitored for viruses than, say, someone's animated avatar... I'm poking around... with my somewhat limited computer literacy... ;p

I just came to look at this thread and had it happen again....Norton tells me it is "taken care of" so I guess it can't be that harsh of a virus or trojan. It DOES keep happening however.

My AVG just "healed" something that was in my explorer/temp file. I normally use Firefox, but I have to open up with explorer because netzero doesn't support firefox. Still. The assholes. It has been said for a long time that netzero is a target, but they still do it. I smell a rat.

Okay, JaggedEdge, Reaper, and Evertking all have animated avs on this thread.
Also, if there's an animated banner ad on when your virus warning goes off, tell which on you are seeing.
Is your Java enabled atm?
Let's keep em coming!!!

The java is enabled....but not running atm as far as I can see....it probably is an ad but I haven't watched closely enough.......I will next time and let you know. I also got two alerts from Microsoft this am....asking to use the active-X control.....I don't know for what. That didn't happen yesterday though, and don't know if it means anything.

if your runnig firefox get the noscript extension installed, it will keep stuff like that from happening.

are any boxes coming up asking you to install anything?? Because it's illegal for an advertising site to put that adware crap on your pc without you agreeing to install something..be careful about clicking advertisements sometimes too..

it was probably something that installed that...the control thing...was it like a certificate or something?? just don't agree to install that crap, I'd say that's what it is..adware or malware..

Actually Mark it was asking for Microsoft to install something...the active -x control and I haven't seen anything since installing it.....I wouldn't install anything unknown. I think it does have to do with one of those flashing ads (like Stinky said). I'll see if it pops up anymore.. :wtf:
Edit....my mistake....it was asking Microsoft to RUN the active-X control.....not install it.....does this make sense?
Ub3rB0ng
09-22-2007, 06:20 PM
yeah it makes sense, anytime something that isnt allowed yet that needs activex and you have restrictions set it will popup a window asking if its cool to do so, generally unless you really need the install dont do it(common sense) . :)

but the control it was wanting to run could've possibly been something that may have been potentially malicious..adware or something..advertisers..I hate em

thinking about it....the request comes up at the same time as the spyware popping up and saying it took care of the problem..I hit enter to the spyware thing and then do the active X control....then a minute later Norton pops up (which is different from my spyware....which is SpySweeper) and says it's taken care of everything. If it does it again I won't run the active-X and see if it makes a difference. ;)

If your using FireFox then you should be totally safe from any threats which maybe linked to these boards, I think.

Quite possible you can nuke it using the program 'killbox'. You should be able to download it somewhere.

it's my belief that this site is devoted to infecting my computers with every nasty little bug ever invented and that you're all in on it. of course, i also believe that there is a little man living in my computer that secretly logs on to asian porn sites while i'm asleep, so you might think twice before lending much credence to anything i have to say.
oh, and janis told me she needed a break, hence her absence from my avatar.

being a computer tech, I run all the 'protection programs' ... my Spy Sweeper was catching a 'spyware' app. trying to access, not the bad Downloader Trojans ... there IS a guy in here currently that is 'scavenging e-mail addresses' from our Forums ... I suspect he is simply reading the boards for posted addresses, but there is a possibility he is running a 'Phish-type program' to gather addresses (he has my brand-new address, that I only gave to 3 trusted people :wtf: ) ... unlikely, as I suspect he's not that smart, and he's trying to sell MOM, harmless enough ... :smokin:

Time to run my anti-virus programs, again. :gunfighter2:

If there is a virus, or any kind of malware at cann.dot, it would explain a lot... my pc has been behaving weird since sometime ago... blue screens are very frequent, and most of them appears when i enter in cann.com... maybe the virus or whatever doesnt work properly on Win98, so it only can make the blue screen appear, but dont do any worse harm... or so i hope...
PS. MANY years ago, at the old ms-dos times, there was a virus called "stoned", that, when activated, displayed a message "Your PC is now stoned."... it would be a nice irony if it were the virus running here at cann.com... :stoned:

If anyone sees the 'virus' again, please just email this information to someone:
-url of the page you were viewing when you were notified of it
-What browser you're running
-Are you running Java
-The name of the suspicious program, including extension
Thanks. This site has always been very 'clean' and we're keeping it that way.
