Here's the question: Can you pay $399 in an Apple store and walk out with an unactivated iPhone without signing any papers?

I'm awaiting answers from people who know this, not just people who will guess and say yes/no.

I think he just wants to hack it, without signing up for AT&T because they suck balls. I'm not sure if you can buy the phone separately, but search around, maybe you'll find someone, maybe ebay?

nope you have to subscibe to a network, unless your from autalia where they have to unlock your phone for free due to their legislation. so the ones that aren't and that are on ebay are likely to be fenced. at least thats my understanding

Just thought I'd post my success.

I bought an iPhone today. I didn't sign a single paper. I don't have anything to do with AT&T. I hacked it back and forth. Now I have a carrier free iPhone. Everything works on it. Wifi, Youtube..... it's awsome.

I know for a fact in the UK the price is £269, and it's ONLY available on the network O2.

Yes, you can go in an AT&T or Apple store and ONLY buy the phone. You do NOT have to sign or sign up for a service at that time. To set up a plan, you have to do that on your computer. I know this because I just bought an iPhone a couple days ago. It was easy as hell; you just go in the store, ask for the phone, and buy it... that's it!
