Lol not really I mean everywheres different, like in america each state has their own accent (I think) and its more or less the same here but a lot of people over here just kind of assume theres just one accent for the whole country you know the main accent thats always on tv whatever it is, the accent the people on friends have lol, and I bet all americans assume that british people speak really posh like the prince or queen or something haha.
slipknotpsycho
09-14-2007, 04:53 AM
ok let me clarify... i'm not talking about accent or annunciation... i'm talking about the words we use to describe diffrent things....
example: i think it's hilarious they say boot/bonnet for trunk/hood.... lol
cannabis campbell
09-14-2007, 04:55 AM
Oh you mean words lol not really I mean we dont use them but we still understand what they mean...
I cant think of anymore now.. ermm...
Lift = Elevator

no every state doesn't have their accent, but there are diffrent sections of the US that have their own (although some states are known for their accents) but basicly it's just southwest, southeast, northwest, and northeast..... now every state does have their own little special bit they add.... but for the most part in those areas, it's pretty much the same.
there's also north and south.... (an invisible line horizontally across the US at about the level of oklahoma) kinda funny too lol.... northerners think we talk all slow weird, while we think they sound like crack heads zipping through their words and mangling them :p
and no, while i can't identify them, i know yal don't all talk the same.... for instance, i know british tend to get really mad when you say they're from england lol.... or something like that....

English people like to make fun of the southern accent, my friends found Berry Cooper's accent especially hilarious when baked or otherwise. American's immitate a posh Queenesque acccent because they can't do a scouser or a geordie, hell they don't even know what they are lol. It's funny because i'm half Enlgish half American but was born in London, i lived in America for 2 years and i visit there like every year pretty much. I don't like America's harsh drug laws, well at least in NJ and no free medical care and expensive ass colleges. I don't like london anymore because of what a chav hole and gang central it's become, it's expensive as hell and picking up can be a hassle sometimes. Which is why i can't wait to move to the Netherlands...
Words i can think of right now are:
Candy/Sweets
Sidewalk/pavement
Sneakers/Trainers
Cletes/Boots
Soccer/Football
Football/American Football
American slang for ganj that i know, dank, piff, dro, fire, kush, kb, beasters, mids, schwag
English: Draw, skunk, punk, puff, benz, hen, score, 2 and a blue, pox, thai, 9bar, zute, bill up
Puma is pronounced differently, aswell as Adidas and Nike
I know there's more but i can't think of any at the moment.

I do think americans talk funny, I think English people talk funny too. I can only reconise a texas accent from America. England/UK is a funny place for accents, within 100 miles there can be loads of different accents. I hope a lot of Americans dont think we all sound posh like they portray us on TV.
Im used to hearing American words such as sidewalk and trunk, and how you say tom-ate-o instead of tom-art-o because I have watched a lot of American TV programmes. You guys make some fantastic TV and movies.
Some English, Scottish and Irish people dont like to be just classed as british, I dont care though.

Actually, to me there's nothing funnier than going to a Chinese restaurant and chatting with with one of the workers in English, and then have them have the strongest Asian accent you've ever heard. We actually had one guy explain it to us while we ate. He says when we talk to him, he at first tries registering what we say in Chinese. Then when it doesn't make any sense he tries it in English and that's why it takes him a few seconds to reply. He's a good guy, always wearing some sort of different hat when we go up there.

If i was pissed and ended up smoking a fag in the US I would be a angry guy and get arrested for a hate crime while in the UK I guess I would just be a drunk guy having a cigarette ;)
I'm positive no American would understand Cockney or Broad Norfolk - hell, most English people dont understand Cockney or Broad Norfolk!
One thing us Brits are great at is fighting - that's what we do.
You got the sterio-typical London gangstas - in the back of a pub in tailored suits talking quietly with sawn off shotguns next to em - That's steriotype is true for the proper gangs though, thats how i was brought up.
I dont find American words/accents funny - i just automacticlly change em into my head into the right words [right for me anyway]
Like if you said put that in the trunk in my head i'd hear it as put that in the boot.

Slip u dont sound like a Texan main, more NM, but anyway here we use words like Aye, Main, Fuk and Shit is used for everything........example that fukin shit was good......could mean good food or good sex. We also dont say yall to much but it happens, alot of broken english/spanish her or spanglish, but also alot of just spanish and mostly mexican spanish yes their is a differeance. Try askin for a match or a light or a car wash in a differnet dialect of spanish and it could mean a fight to the death. example Chinga las trastes..........means wash the dishes but here it means fuck the dishes.............big differance.

I have a funny story about that. When I was 15 we had my dad's friend come stay with us in Florida, and he had a cockney accent. One night I came home and was rather high, I was standing there talking to him with my hands on my hips. He says " Don't stand like that or you will get falalom", I was like WTF and asked him to say it again. Again he says don't stand like that or you will get falalom, again like WTF. I'm stoned and thinking WTF is falalom, a disease (I was rather high). After 5 times of him repeating it I said write it down. He writes don't stand like that or you will get followed home.

My mom's family is from BC (my Oma and Opa...the only words I know how to say in Dutch lol), so they speak French, and have a very thick accent. I, on the other hand, was raised in the deep south, so it makes for an interesting vacation when we visit. I don't think it neccessarily sounds "funny", just different. I'm so used to the southern accent, that I don't even realize how "country" I sound untill I travel up north, and everyone looks at me like I'm a "hick", lol. I'm not nearly as bad as Cohutta (for those of you Real World Sydney fans), but I definetly have a twang:)

I found that clip so ironic, and I'm sure you know why being an Entourage fan. On the show, he has a gay assistant, and you wouldn't believe the shit he says to him. He literally gay bashes him on one of the most popular shows on TV, but it's absolutely hilarious. Here's an example:

It is funny that we call the language we speak in America "English".
We have mutated the language so much that even in this country, one word can have too many different meanings and saying it one way in one part of the country can be ok but, in another part of the country, "dems is fightin' words".
I do not speak English, I speak American and my version of American is mixed with a perfect score in my English classes in school when I went and street slang because I spent a good portion of my life living on the streets like an animal.
Now that Live a good honest life in a house with my wife, I still struggle with my street vocabulary trying to rule my mouth.

Every region has their own accent/dialect. New York, New England, Southern(hate the accent), western, midwest, northern(Minnisota, wisconsin, etc).
I guess I'm midwest(illinois), pretty much the same as on national news. Except everyone says the word 'roof' wrong.
