i know there are other threads about this but i have been looking around and none of them really answer my Q......any ways why are the rubber rings and the end of the down pipe bad? and what is this lil plastic/rubber looking thing

ps i havent seen any other types of bongs with out a lil plastic/rubber thing

You are not actually heating the plastic/rubber ring because glass acts as an insulator of heat rather than a conductor. The plastic would never reach a temperature to release toxic fumes.

thats just for a tight seal my friend, so no air gets around sides of stem, causing loss off air pressure, resulting in a shitty hit
