The dangers of dihydrogen monoxide include:

* Also called "hydroxyl acid", the substance is the major component of acid rain;
* Contributes to the greenhouse effect;
* Contributes to the erosion of our natural landscape;
* Accelerates corrosion and rusting of many metals.;
* Excessive ingestion may cause various unpleasant effects, including death;
* Prolonged contact with its solid form results in severe tissue damage;
* Inhalation, even in small quantities, may cause death;
* Its gaseous form may cause severe burns;
* It has been found in the tumors of terminal cancer patients;
* For those who have become dependent, DHMO withdrawal means certain death;

Despite the danger, DHMO is often used:

* Used in many forms of cruel animal research;
* The US Navy has a secret distribution network for DHMO;
* Lakes and rivers all over the world are contaminated with DHMO;
* In the distribution of pesticides. Even after washing, produce remains contaminated by this chemical;
* As an additive in certain "junk-foods" and other food products;
* Known to be a component of a number of cancer-causing agents

Nevertheless, governments and corporations continue using it widely, heedless of its grave dangers.

Penn & Teller did an expose on DHMO a while back. Got people at an environmental rally to sign petitions calling for a ban.

Heck! My dad pulled this on naval recruits was back in the 50s and 60s! He made me figure out what it was. Of course, this was much better than his earlier (I was 5) "brown cows give chocolate milk"!

Dihydrogen Monoxide has been a known danger for many years. Its one of the few substances that can be a liquid, solid or vapor. It has a neutral PH. Its colorless, and odorless so its possible that you will almost never know when you have been exposed to it in lethal concentrations.

Something less known is that tooth paste is not quite as benign as most folks think. The active ingredient is Sodium Floride...... Ever wonder why sometimes tooth paste has a blue tint to it??

NIOSH Document: Pocket Guide to Chemical Hazards (2005-149) : Sodium fluoride (as F) | CDC/NIOSH (http://www.cdc.gov/niosh/npg/npgd0563.html)

Thought you might want to know :wtf:
