Marijuana / Question
Published: February 25, 2003

Dear TeenHealthFX,

I am turning 15 in a few monthes and have just quit heavy smoking of marijuana after starting about a year ago. I heard that marijuana kills testosterone in males and i am concerened that it has interfered with my puberty. I am almost positive that I have Gynecomastia although I have not been diagnosed. Will this go away? Also, my penis has grown very little if not at all during puberty so far and is 2.5 inches soft and about 4 inches erect. My voice has just slightly deepened and I have had pubic hair for about a year now as it has continued to grow while I was on the drug. I would like to know if the use of the drug has killed any testosterone. Will my penis grow at all??? Your help would be greatly appreciated. ( i am begining to feal depresed..i need an answer)

Dear Quit Heavy Marijuana Use - Will All These Problems Go Away?,

TeenHealthFX is glad that you wrote and happy to hear that you have decided to stop smoking marijuana. As you may already know, marijuana does have serious negative short and long term effects on your overall health -- you have absolutely done the right thing in giving it up.

Smoking pot can cause abnormal increased breast development in males called gynecomastia. This is because chronic use in males has been shown to decrease blood levels of sex hormones, including testosterone, which can lead to decreased sexual pleasure, low sperm counts and decreased sperm mobility and yes, also to the increased development of breasts in males. Only a doctor can tell you for sure if you have developed this condition.

Pre-pubertal males are already dependent on testosterone to jump-start the usual process of puberty, i.e. for deepening of their voice, causing an increase in their sexual organ size, and hair growth. Any decrease in testosterone can affect this process, and potentially influence breast or other development. Please see Marijuana's Permanent Side Effects and Concerned Weed Smoker for more details.

Having that said, your penis size is in the normal range. Penises come in all shapes and sizes at your age and you most likely have nothing to worry about in that department.

Since you are so concerned, it would be a good idea to make an appointment with a doctor who can evaluate you and talk about any risks and long-term side effects you may be subject to because if your marijuana use. He or she can answer any of your related questions in detail and if nothing else, hopefully set your mind at ease. If you do not have a physician and live in the Northern New Jersey area, you can contact the Adolescent/Young Adult Center for Health at 973.971.6475.

I agree. Looks like the adult only rule lets a few get through the net.
