Don't forget your calmag plus!!!
And test it for pH- rainwater often contains sulfuric and nitric acid in concentarions high enough to register low pH. This comes from combustion of fossil fuels in the area where your local weather systems originate. For example, upstate New York suffers acid rain from factories and city smog originating in the 'rust belt' on the south shores of the Great Lakes.
I live in idaho so i dont think i have to worry about acid rain too much :D

Umm- a fair amount of the smog in LA originated in China, and the smog where I live originates 500-1500 miles away.
Idaho's not a differant planet.
everytime i check the weather channel the air condition is excellent here.

DON'T use rainwater ... simple ... rainwater is distilled water, condensed in the clouds, and picking up pollutants on the way down ... since it is distilled water, it has no calcium, no magnesium, or any other necessary minerals ... :smokin:
i have to let my tap water sit for 3 days before i use it anyway, which makes it pretty much distilled anyway

No it doesn't.
Tap water carries dissolved minerals such as calcium, magnesium, sodium, and potassium, along with most commonly nitrate, phosphate, bromate, and other ions. Allowing it to rest doesn't remove the minerals.
These are at levels safe for human consumption but my interfere with a hydroponic system.

mmm... fair amount of crap is never going to precipitate/offgas/oxidize, no matter how long it sits.
Is your tap water supply really bad?

i just about responded the other night. rain water it self is clean, it doesnt absorb minerals and such till it goes through the ground. i almost got pissy with rhizome because he lives in a heavily polluted valley on the other side of the mountains. then you have dessert climate.?
stinkyattic

Rain water doesn't absorb a significant level of minerals (Ca, Mg) while it is still in the atmosphere, but it DOES absorb pollution components.
Desert climate doesn't help you. If you live in an area where your storm systems come from elsewhere (as we all do actually), look to the origin of your weather patterns.
Storm systems don't originate in desert areas- there's little water to evaporate into the atmosphere to begin with!
And finally, did you know that PCB contamination has been found in measurable amounts in the tissues of people everywhere on Earth, even in very remote areas away from industry... stuff travels, and travels FAR, carried by thermal currents in the oceans and atmosphere.

right, this was a thing about having a little to drink and not explaining myself correctly. i was talking about la in particular but the whole of the rockies stopping alot of rain and smog even, on the west coast side. some places will be cleaner than others but i dont think anywhere is free of chemicals that we have pumped into the air or ground. i dont think im coming off much better now so i will stop. sorry.

:angry3: rhizome, you are no doubt intelligent but you live in the armpit of the USA. i'll have my beer now. lol. but honestly what do you think is cleaner? the ground on which we stand (that gets watered by all this rain?) or the rain before it falls to the ground? you either have city water or you have a well, or bottled water, where does that come from? i honestly dont know what your stink is about this kid using rainwater. sorry.
BTW. pepto pink and country blue should be stricken from the color wheel. JMHO

No stink at all- he/she should use any water source that he wants to. Those would be his/her plants, and he/she should use whatever he/she wants.
My point was to dispell the myth that rainwater is clean- it isn't, and hasn't been since we discovered coal as a fuel. The large scale use of chemical pesticides sure as hell hasn't helped.
And when I see statements like...
rain water is fresh and clean and i disagree with anyone else who says otherwise
...well, that's just misinformation, and faith-based at that.
Rain water is no panacea for water quality problems- it has issues all it's own, and they're getting worse.
When people say that they live in a rural area, and that therefore they " don't have to worry about acid rain", again- they're misinformed.
I don't care what water this individual chooses to use- I just want them to make an informed choice.
By the way- I actually live in a quite bucolic area which is transitioning from primarily agricultural to mixed use ag/suburban- and our local farmers are quite aware of the decline in rain water quality. Thousands of miles from LA.

Rhyzome is correct ... as a photographer, I'm well-aware that tourists to the Grand Canyon are encouraged to buy their photographs from the Gift Shop, because it is virtually impossible to take good photographs of the Canyon, the years of smog from L.A. has permanently 'hazed-over' the Canyon ... and, it has been this way for quite a few years ... I don't advise against rainwater for it's pollutants, I don't recommend it, just because you have to add calcium and magnesium, plus the hassle of gathering it, so why not just make it easier, by using other water sources ?? ... :smokin:

i know, it is already a problem with national monuments in the u.s. and a huge prob. with the other monuments that are a thousand+ yrs old in rome. i wasnt really disagreeing about the problems with water. just that you couldnt use it.

Rainwater, before going into the groundwater supply, has to percolate through the ground- sitting in a swamp for a while really does a lot to clean it up; the plants can use some of the chemicals in it, and some species can even uptake and bind organic compounds and heavy metals.
very interesting stinkyattic....

I use ac, dehumidifier water, and rain water.
most cities get their water from rivers and lakes. just google your local water com. it's all there what's in the water.
human poo is listed on everyone. no poo in the sky?
very few get well water, and well water translates to hard water, soft water, or whatever ferts and pesticides the farmer had run off his tobacco.
acid rain is the reason you test ALL water sources ph and ec. aquafina anyone?
please do not take offence. this is IMHO&exp.
