Hydroton transplant? I think my pots are too small...

The guy at the hydro store gave me these pots (5x5x6)and I think they're too small, day 22 and the roots have been showing through the holes in the bottom for about a week.

Do I need bigger pots? If so, how do I transplant them without fucking anything up?

Fill a bigger size pot, one that will work for you, half way with hydroton. Next place your existing pot right in the middle of the bigger pot. Then fill the sides in with hydroton. Thats what I would do. Anyone else?

Umm- I've got a strobilanthes that's about 4' tall and 5' in diameter, a brugmansia about the same size, and the biggest salvia divornum you've ever seen, all going in hydroton in those same 5.5" square pots.

They're fine.

If you're married to the transplant-
-Fill a 5g bucket w/ about 4g of water.
-Lower pot to be transplanted into water & remove pot. Unentrapped hydroton will float off.
- Put plant aside gingerly.
-Fill new pot about 2/3 way w/ hydroton and lower partway into water. Hydroton will begin to float inside pot.
-Place rootball of plant into floating hydroton, holding the plant at the level you want it to sit at.
- Slowly raise pot up out of water, holding plant where you want it to be. Hydroton will settle gently around rootball.
- If pot is not full enough, repeat- adding more hydroton to mostly submerged pot. Raise holding the plant where you want it to end up.

You don't need bigger pots. You need something to support the plants as the branches start to get heavy.
