So for those of Americans you that dont know, the mega-millions lottery jackpot tonight is $330,000,000. I just picked up a few tickets myself, not really with the thought of winning but hey why not donate some money to public schools and gamble at the same time?

Anyways I was just wondering, if you were to win this incredible amount of money what would you buy first? Id have to go with the Aston Martin DB9, fucking beautiful.....

lol funny you should mention that car, i was just given the oppurtunity to buy it on need for speed carbon...

honestly? i'm not that greedy... i'd probably donate a hefty chunk to charities (i heard for cash pay out you get about 170 million) so like, easily 70 million to various charities..

then i'd of course, probably offer everyone in my family who i still care about, a million easily.... (alot more for my brother, and grandparents)

i'd get us (wife, son and myself) a pretty damn good house, but nothing ridiculous... of course with a huge garage, so i could start building my dream car.... but with that much, it'd be far more than i could of ever dreamed, and it would be everyone else's nightmare :D

i'd put away atleast 10 mil for my son's education, and money for him to live off of once he's 18.... although i'd take steps to make sure he only gets what would be nessicary to live off of comfterably (and to rise as inflation does) if i was just to give him nearly 10 mil once he's 18, i can only imagine the laziness he'd obtain...

i'd rather just make sure he's provided for and make sure he still has to work for all his random wants

other then that, pretty much all of it would just be stuck in the bank... i wouldn't go crazy (other then what i've mentioned) and spending it all... i'd rather know i got a nice hefty sum for me and my wife to live off of..

wow, sure is fun thinknig about what i'd do with it...

ive really gotta ask...and think seriously about this, do you think winning the lottery would make your life better or worse?

personally, i can think of nothing worse than winning the lottery. think about it, you have 330 extra large, and EVERYONE knows it. everyone from the local librarians to the democrats is going to call you up asking for money, you'll never know if people want to be around you because of you or because you have lotsa money. fuck that noise. i'd rather be working for a paycheck than waiting to win the lottery.

We got some tickets when we went out earlier!

I can think of all sorts of wonderful stuff I'd do with that money. I think I'd retire from school and retire my husband and pay off the houses and debt of those close to us. Then we could travel, work on philanthropic projects and just have fun. Wouldn't have to live like The Bigs. We'd just be free to go and do whatever we wanted. That, to me, sounds exceptionally pleasant. I know it might be an administrative hassle at first. I know all the solicitations for money are hard for winners to deal with, among other things. But I'd hire someone else to deal with the administrative minutiae. We've always been prudent with money until now, and I see no reason we'd turn into big spenders after a big jackpot win. Might as well use that cash to do others some good.

actually, like i said 170 cash, and even if you win, and don't take flat out cash you still don't get 330... :p but yes i see where you're going... that's why you keep money for payoffs :p somebody busts in your house with a gun saying either sign it over or die, you offer 'em 500k to go away, or kill you and get 0... which do you think they'd take? :D

Is it true that in the US if you win the lottery or on those game shows, the government takes almost 50% of it in taxes? Cause that's fucked if it's true.

So if you had that much money you'd want to live in an apartment? Why not A house thats not filled with so many great things lol.

I'd Pay off the house bills, family members house bills. Buy a 1 floor house with a basement so 2 floors lol ( HUGE BASEMENT ), Big Back yard and front yard with a patio. Id give money to the family members that I like. Buy things for my truck.

Buy around 1 ounce because I know IF i buy more I will just be smoking non stop and well my tolerance is already at a High Steady level SO i barely get stoned unless its really High grade bud and alot of it.

Why? You would still have to be paying for it. Why not just get a small house and pay for those bills? You could easily pay that off and still have like more then 95% of it left

I'd pay off every single penny of debt that my family and friends have accumulated, such as cars, credit cards, houses, etc. I'd also give some money to every member of my family, so that they'll be comfortable for the rest of their lives, and I'd definately buy each of my close family a house or whatever they wanted.

I'd donate a large percentage to different charities that would help the causes I believe in, and I dunno, alot of other stuff. Some money would go to the pro-legalisation cause, hospitals/clinics, the poor, sick and underpriviledged, schools, animal shelters, and anything else I can think of. That much money would be almost impossible to spend by one person, and it would be pointless to do anything with it other than give it away to people who can use it to do good.

I'd do stuff for myself though, obviously. I'd move somewhere nice, buy a decent sized house, car, etc.. Just generally make sure I'm comfortable and happy, and spend my time not worrying about money and other shit and do the things I enjoy with the people I love.

But dude, right now, being at college, even winning a thousand pounds would change my life! Lol

I'd buy Thailand, first of all. Someone has to rescue all those hookers from those American perverts.

OK, not really.

I would make investment plans for all my friends/relatives that would just *know* that I'd take care of them, they would even wait for me to call them I'd wager.

I'd buy my wife's church a lot of cool sheet. I'd resubscribe to Children's International, what the hell, sponser five kids instead of three. They keep sending the damn newsletters after two years at least that I stopped forking over cash. They got my number. Charities are so rude nowadays. I'm almost positive whoever runs the special olympics fund raising sells names... f***ing GRRRRRR.

Oh, I'd rebuild my truck from the ground up. No mo' plastic for this rig. Upgrade everything. what the hell, integrate a mobile wifi transmitter. 330 million should be able to buy me COMPLETE stealth from radar, that's pretty high on the list. What the hell, get some russian to hook me up with an EMP device, and sheild everything on my own rig. How many trucks can still be rolling after a nuclear attack?

And I would so totally show up for work for at least one more year. Not to rub anything in anybodies face, but to not succumb to complete utter reckless spending sprees all day, every day.

I've realized that if I'm not at work, I'm spending money, so I might as well be working and not be blowing buckets of cash on $300 humidity monitering automatically activated bathroom replacement fans for my bathroom in my apartment.

Ahh, who am I kidding, I'd just be happy to get 10 million, then I'd fork the rest over to my neurotically philanthropistic wife.

Did anyone hear about someone winning the $317 million last week? Not sure if anyone has come forward to claim it yet though. Thats insane! I would burn through the money helping all of my friends and family out. New houses, new cars...that would be awesome. I was complaining to my sister about how awful my luck is, and she said "you have to play to win"....and she's completely right. Someone has to win, why not me? So I might buy a ticket next time.

This reminds me of a hilarious story...
A few weeks ago at my hubby's birthday get together, one of our friends handed him a gift with a lottery scratch off attached. Our friend said that he has spent his last few bucks on it, so if we won something, we should split it. Of course we agreed. So Mike started scratching....and scratching, and then he looks at me with this shocked look, and shows me the ticket. He won $10,000! So he starts getting all excited...showing everyone, and making plans for what we're gonna buy with the money. So the friend says, read on the back to see where we need to go to cash in the ticket...he starts reading...."cash prizes are redeemable at Yo momma's house"...lol. As soon as he reads it out loud, he realizes it was a joke, and looks up at us with this "okay guys...you really got me" look. I laughed about that for weeks. Apparently they sell them at Spencers...and they are sooo convincing. They had him fooled, for sure. I was in on it the whole time, so it was even funnier. Glad they told me it was a joke...I probably would have had a heart-attack! Good stuff:)

Any cannabis smokers in Indiana? That's apparently where the winning ticket was sold!

If I won the lottery, nothing would change, I'd just buy a modest house by the beach in Thailand, invest the rest and live on that for the rest of my life!

I'd bribe our corrupt government into legalising cannabis fully, and making it avaliable to EVERYONE for free. If blair was still PM i'd get myself on the honers list for sure.

I'd give alot of it to charities, but mainly cancer charities.

I'd buy everything i've ever wanted, a very nice house - and i'd still have plenty left over.

I'd probably end up getting so wasted i'll be driving around throwing money out the window.

I have narrowed the odds a lot on Powerball and Lousianna Lotto..... having been a machinist in a previous life, I know that there is absolutely no way that there can be 50 however many balls made *EXACTLY* the same....there will always be some differances in surface finish, molecular density, roundness, etc... no matter how slight, they will be there. Consider.... take the numbers from the last 30 or so drawings... count up how many times each number came up....some will come up 5 or 6 times, others will not have been drawn at all. Use the numbers that come up most frequently, and you will narrow the odds considerably. I generally break even... and I only missed the $310M Powerball jackpot by 2 numbers.

FWIW, If I did win the big one, I would have to get the annuity.... think 5 or 6 million a year (after taxes) for 30 years. once I had my family taken care of, my own needs and wants would only run about $200,000. After the first splurge, I can live off of the interest very nicely. For the rest... my church would get 10%, I would have to make a sizable donation to the Shriners hospitals and burn centers, set up a foundation to make loans/grants for college educations and start-up businesses.

BTW... the tax rate for me as a single taxpayer, and sole propriator is approximately 40%.

You guys do know that if you choose annuity, and you die during that time, they don't continue to pay out.
For that reason I would go with the payout. You would all probably end up poor the way you are talking about it.
I would probably end up investing most of it. I don't really see the need to be so flashy. I would pay off peoples loans but that wouldn't be that much, 2 million max (and that is a stretch). I would start a scholarship and donate some money to charities and to causes that I believe in. I wouldn't want some ridiculous mansion, I would just like to live comfortably.

birdgirl73
09-01-2007, 03:41 PM
That's not true, DreadConches. A win is a win. If you die before the annuity payments are complete, the remaining annuity payments go to your estate, which you'd definitely have if you won a jackpot like that. Scroll down this link to read the FAQ about that very topic:

Ok, well everyone is shit out of luck as 4 winning tickets were sold to Megamillions. What a bummer, they have to split 330 four ways! The states were the tickets were sold were:
Maryland(1), New
Jersey(1), Texas(1) and Virginia(1).

Ok, for our foreign friends who asked about taxes, I think it is 25% for federal taxes and then state taxes range from 0.0% to almost 8%, depending on where it was sold and if you are a resident of that state or non resident.

Lump sum payouts usually are about 48% of the jackpot. I recommend taking the lump sum and dumping most of your money in stock options on Google, Apple, and Research in Motion (makers of the Blackberry, which has almost doubled since the end of June and I was telling everyone to buy it before their quarterly earnings announcement). You will more than double your money in 30 years on those stock options. You will actually make many times that over.

Last weekend Powerball had one winner in Indiana for $314 million.

Some states allow you to claim the prize anonymously.

Like I just mentioned, I would dump most of my lump sum payout in about 5 stock companies and not just stocks but stock options. I would pay off all my family member's bills and buy them what they want. I'm buying myself a Ferrari 599 GTB or a Mercedes SLR and a used Gulfstream G-5. So obviously I will be getting my pilot's license too. Then I'm going to start my own company, some kind of capital investment company or a real estate/construction company to eventually rival Donald Trump. After my stock options start paying out, then I am not going to give to charity but start my own charity.

One thing I would not do is let them put my face and name all over the media! I would buy houses all over the US, and the world. Buy my family houses and cars. I would open up medical marijuana dispensaries all over California, and have a team of really good lawyers to get my back.

Then I would hire some badass artists to work on my comic.

I would go on a world tour with my wife, then settle down and have kids.

I would also run for office probably on the Green Party ticket. Also work to get federal drug laws repealed.

I would also produce a pro-marijuana propaganda movie. It would be to medical marijuana patients what Philadelphia was for gay people. We need to change our image, and change the national zeitgeist toward marijuana.

Sometimes I think movies like Half-Baked, and the Cheech and Chong movies, though funny can be bad for the movement. "Mainstream" American society looks at potheads as criminals, idiots, hippies, losers, drug addicts and slackers. I would like to produce a big-budget movie about a medical marijuana user (someone that has MS) that is using it illegally, and then gets busted, and thrown in jail. It could be based on a true story. Sorry tangent.

I would invest in silver, gold, and land. I would invest a little in stock markets.

I also would get a really good tax lawyer, and stop paying the IRS, because there is now law that says we have to pay federal income tax, and I'm sick of it!

If I had $170 million dollars, I would start funding NORML, buy a 6:15 PM commercial slot of Fox and ABC for a couple months and put together a pro-cannabis commercial to educate the ignorant that Cannabis is both capable of being a good recreational substance, and an incredible medicine. I would push my hardest for legalization, because if I had that much money, I wouldn't have to work, so I'd spend all that extra time trying to promote cannabis. (I never use the word Marijuana. That is a degrading term for the wonderful plant.)

After I convince Congress to pass Bill 420, I would buy two acres of land in South Texas, put up a fifteen-foot brick wall around the premises, and build two underground facilities hooked up with all that high-tech security gear and climate controls. In Facility A, codenamed "Ground", I will keep a library of live specimens of many different strains of cannabis in vegatative stage, 3/4's of the facility will be strictly female specimens. The last fourth will be male, and tightly secured with it's own ventallation. Facility B, codenamed "Truth", will have the same strains of specimens as Ground, except in flowering stages. Each facility would each have about an acre of floor space to work with. Perhaps a third one would be built below those two, codenamed "Lord", and that one would be dedicated to breeding of the Cannabis plants. To power all of this, almost the entire ground-level will be covered with Solar panels and/or windmills.

Wow... I sure can daydream...
