how can you tell when to harvest

I have 3 plants in my backyard. I would like to know how can you tell by looking at the buds or the plant when is the right time to harvest?

also, how do you dry it, can you hang dry in the sun. no room in the house. temperature is very hot where i live.

ive always been told to harvest when the trichs are an amber color...and idk bout dryin in the sun...im sure it'd work but its gonna fuck up ur thc...cuz it needs to be in a dark cool place

And don't dry under the sun. :)
