I'll second the Philip K. Dick recommendation. Find some place to spawl out, smoke a bowl, and read A Scanner Darkly.

Everyone's forgotten Robert A. Heinlein, not only the best sci-fi writer in history, but possibly the most important writer of anything in history.

Heinlein's great, Card's great, Dick IS A MAD GENIUS, Hebert's good (though Dune is really the only "must read" by him), Zelazny is certainly worth reading, and Le Guin's sci-fi is alright (her fantasy is better).

Harry Harrison is a really good author. My personal favorite is his Stainless Steel Rat series about a super criminal in the future. Sort of a reverse James Bond in space. :D

I once drove across Arizona, New Mexico, and Colorado while listening to Sphere on tape. Made a boring drive go by in no time. :D

Also, just bought Pirate Latitudes for my wife for X-mas.

House of Suns by Alastair Reynolds in a spectacular science fiction book. If you like science fiction full of crazy ideas and technology read this book.
