Fun With LSD

Real LSD was always a lot of fun. I knew a chemist who had been trained,
or so he claimed, by Owsley. Twice a year he would buy the ingredients and
produce a hundred vials or so. He no longer wanted to stone the world just a few
thousand people at a time. I usually got a call in early October and would pick up
one or two for the people I knew.
By that time I no longer took even a full drop at a time, between being a
single Dad with two sons and working in Los Angeles I was just too busy to spend
forty eight hours watching the grass grow. I still managed to take a little time and
enjoy the sacrament but I was much more careful about time and place.
One weekend the boys were at friends for the weekend and one of my
regulars came down so we headed into the desert for a weekend with a fresh vial.
There is something very spiritual about any wilderness and the desert is no
exception. I knew of an oasis in the middle of the desert so we hiked in on
Saturday morning and arrived just before noon. My friend was always the life of
the party so we called him Quinn ( the Eskimo) after the Bob Dylan song. As we
surveyed the grove of palm trees the Quinn explained he had not taken liquid
LSD before and how did I figure the dose. I showed him the vial which was about
the size and shape of those small breath drops and took the cap off. I held it
upright and rubbed my finger across the top and then placed my finger in my
mouth.
??That??s all it takes? I told him
??Right? He took the bottle and stuck out his tongue and allowed a full drop
to fall on it.
??Careful? I told him ?That stuff is fresh and pretty powerful?
?? I??ll be fine? He told me
We wandered through the grove for a while, wading in the stream and
watching the wildlife as the animals and birds came out of the heat of the desert
and refreshed in the grove under the shade. An hour later I was intrigued with a
rock formation and lost track of the Quinn. After a while I heard him calling to me
so I wandered around until I found him.
He was wrapped around a palm tree with his feet in the water and his arms
clasped around the trunk.
??What??s happening man?? I asked him
??Man, I know everything. All the answers to the questions. If I had a pencil
and paper I could solve the problems of the world. World peace, the energy
crisis, how to feed the poor, I know it all.?
??Sounds good man, how do you feel??
?? Yea, good man, real good. Uh...can you walk back to the truck and bring
me a pencil and paper??
??No I really don??t think I can walk that far, at least not back; that??s a long
way man?
?? Yea,.... yea,....but all the answers, .......all of them, I know them all.......?
??Well you know where the truck is why don??t you walk there??
?? I don??t know....I think I??m getting the answers from this tree so I don??t
want to let go as long as I??m tuned in.... you know??
??Yea, I know. You want to see a cool rock??
??No....no.....I think I??ll just sit here for a while.....wow?
I checked back on the Quinn occasionally for the rest of the afternoon and
he seemed to be fine holding on to his tree and keeping his feet in the water.
When evening started to come on I knew I needed to walk out so I went over to
him and told him I was headed back to the camp site.
??Yea, that??s cool man.?
??You ought to come with me.?
?? Yea....yea...Maybe in a while?
??I??m going to head out now, you ought to join me. I got some weed in the
truck?
??Yea....sounds good.....I think I??ll just hang here for a while?
??Quinn, it??s like five miles back to the truck and a couple more back to the
camp, we really got to go.?
??No man, you go. I??ll be fine. I??ll be there in a while. I just, well you know, I
got a few more things to learn here....?
?? Ok man?
I headed for the trail and turned around
??You sure you??re OK now??
???Yea...yea, I??m fine see you in a bit.?
Right, I thought, hell I??m too high to remember that by the time I get back.
It was full dark by the time I made it back to the truck. Fortunately I made it
to the marked trail before the light was gone so I at least had a path to follow.
When I got to the truck the stars were out and the sky was full of the milky way in
all its glory. I sat at the truck for a while and smoked a bowl while I lay on my
back watching the sky. After a bit I was hungry so I headed back to the camp for
some food.
I had the stove and the lamp going and was working on seconds of the
stew I had made when I heard something coming over the hill behind the camp. A
minute later the Quinn appeared and he settled on to the picnic table with a
relaxed air. I wasn??t sure where he had come from as the trail to the oasis was
more to the east and he had come in from the south. When I asked him he
explained he had just walked through the desert until he found his way back. I
thought it was a minor miracle that he wasn??t lost or injured falling into a wash,
but I guess the spirits wanted him to make it home that night .
