Politically motivated hackers calling themselves "the Internet Liberation Front (ILF)" have defaced six Republican web sites on January 18.
On the modified pages, it read ??In solidarity with the billions around the world who are being oppressed under the Bush agenda, The Internet Liberation Front has hacked and defaced six Republican websites who push forward the sick and violent ideology of warfare, capitalism, and profit over people.? followed by an anti-Bush and anarchist text. The hacktivists probably exploited the well-documented vulnerability in phpBB, which was widely used by crackers and worms over the past weeks.

For those who remember, the ??Internet Liberation Front? or ??ILF? brings us ten years back in the computer security history, when they hacked into companies like Pipeline, ibm, at&t.. and tons of other accomplishments including the defacement of the ??Hackers? movie homepage during a defcon conference (a mirror is available here: http://www.attrition.org/mirror/attrition/1995/08/12/www.mgmua.com-hackers/ ), even though the ??group? seemed to be an international movement of independant hackers who shared the same ideas, like explained in the defacement: ??We are not a specific group of people. We are a generation of hackers who feel indignation and want to build a world free from parasitic bosses and rulers. All who want to join the resistance movement are free to use the name ILF. We are everywhere?.

What we can notice is that the defacements were quite organized, especially in the way they were done to hit the media and to look for worldwide supporters to help them spread their message.

The defaced sites were:

www.arizonayr.com

www.freedominstitute.ca

www.republicanfirst.com

www.Students4Freedom.com

www.freedominion.ca

www.CollegeConservative.com

January 20 05:00 GMT: 3 of them are still defaced, but a mirror is also available here: http://www.zone-h.org/en/defacements/mirror/id=1996392/

My friend crashed the entire west coast's internet believe it or not, or something like that. The government just blamed some other guy as a scapegoat and sent him to jail (or just gave him a new identity or something).

You'll be seeing a lot more cyber terrorism in the future. I doubt much of it will be foriegn though.

Step one: Write or steal a program that will ping an IP address, endlessly.
Step two: Write or steal a program to send the pinging program, to everyone and their neighbor.
Step three: Remotely activate the pinging program, to ping your least favorite website.

When www.windowsupdate.com got pinged by most of the world, it shutdown for a couple days.

Your friend needs a swift kick in the balls. I grow tired of idiots who cost people billions of dollars and hours of internet usage just to give themselves a power-trip and assure their own ego's. it's pathetic really.

On July 26, 2005, infamous Russian spammer Vardan Kushnir was discovered to have been beaten to death in his Moscow apartment. Although it has not been proven that his murder was related to his spamming activities, he has been targeted by anti-spammers in earlier attacks.

I've felt insensitive on several occasions tonight, but.... L-O-L

Hey, neato. It's always nice to see people spreading the anarchist message, especially through the capitalists' own propaganda dispensers.

You'll be seeing a lot more cyber terrorism in the future. I doubt much of it will be foriegn though.
Cyber...terrorism? Where is the violence in defacing a web page? It's more like cybervandalism, the equivalent of tagging a wall, not blowing people up.
