First Grow, 500$ and a dream

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
So I have always been toying with the idea of growing my own marajuana. For personal use my friends use and maybe a little extra cash on the side. So one fine saturday I decided to do it. I have non experience with growing marajuana, but a green thumb runs in my family. So I started searching the internet for the first thing i would need, SEEDS!. I almost bought seeds from a site called "Mellow Gold". I had all my information typed in , but left my credit card number empty. I pushed enter to see what would happen, and sure enough it was a scam site. The owner even emailed me back trying to get my credit card number. So I browsed on and started looking on forums. Thats when I stumbled across this fine site. I Spent hours and hours reading everything i could find about growing, light types ventilation CPM, CFL, CSD, HID, and many more abbreviations untill I thought I knew it all. So I orderd my seeds from Gypsy nirvana's seed boutique. I order a pack of "Flying Dutchman Royal Orange". I also recieved with this bag a free bag called "Sam The skunk mans Poison X #1 South african. Royal Orange is a 60% indica, 40% sativa strain. With my seeds in hand, my desire to grow increased even more. So I Started my search at Home Depot. It took me 8 trips and 311 Dollars to finally get everything i needed for a stealthy grow. I had decided that I was going to try a cabinet grow. This would seem to be the easiest way to hide any unwanted smells which may expose my hobby. I also hit up Rona for some lighting and this is what I took home with me.

The large tube florsent lights I returned as useless, as well as the ballasts for the CFL
http://img39.picoodle.com/img/img39/...1m_0e56efc.jpg[/url light bulbs. I kept the 150watt sodium security light however and the cfl light bulbs. I Later bought a 300 watt T5 CFL grow light which i have yet to install. So later that week I began the construction of my cabinet. This cabinet is actually a wardrobe that i bought at the hardware store. It was cheap and poorly made, consisting of particle board and a cardboard back. I Sighed and purchase some Nice solid pine planks to make up the back and give this thing some strength. I also purchased a 40 dollar bathroom fan and cut a hole in the back with a jigsaw and mounted the fan to blow air in with a strong poxy. I then proceeded to cut a 6" in hole in the top of the cabinet to mount and inline fan, and using my information from this forums , I painted the insides completly white. Now to deal with the smell of growing marajuana in a small appartment. I quickly found designs for a active carbon air scrubber that would fit very nicely over my inline fan. Here are pictures of what my cabinet looked like while it was being build and when it was finished.

Ah finally finished, and in my appartment.

Now To start germinating my seeds and begin the grow!. Im very cautious person so I started growing the sativa bag of skunk. I Placed all the seeds into a dish wrapped them in paper towel and watterd the paper towl. I coverd the dish with another dish and placed it upon my fridge. Then i waited, and waited, and waited. Finally 3 seeds split open slightly, and then I waited some more. 4 days laters no tap roots had appeared at all on the seeds that split. So I planted the seeds anyway being the impatient person that I am. I waterd them and gave them light for another full week and still nothing budged

I got impatient and dug up the seeds and not one of them had developed further, so I figured they were old and tossed them away. Then I broke out the good seeds, the "Flying dutchman Royal orange. I started the germination processes like i had with the skunk X and they immediatly developed tap roots withing 40hours. I quickly went to the store and bought 2 bags of 16 10 10 miracle grow wet soil, and two bags of 14 14 14 soil and one bag of organic soild. I mixed them all together and put a layer of water retaining soil on the top. I used MUCH larger pots this time and lined the button with granite gravel. Using a Bathroom light fixture i created a 6 CFL bulb seed board. I loaded up my Wardrobe placed the tap roots down into the soil and burried the seeds about quarter an inch deep. Now i wait. BTW all that duct tape is to tryin and make the cabinet light proof. The dam thing lit up my room when i first turned it on.

good luck bro! but i would not have used that soil if i were you, miricle grow is known for being very shitty for marijuana, and you do not want to give the plants any nutes just yet,

if i were you i would get a nice little 250watt hps, its way better then cfl's and only about 120 shipped of ebay (for a new one of course)

again goodluck and i hope ya get some good buds

peace out TjM

Do you think the soils that i used are much to hot to grow seeds in? Im starting to get worried the more i think of it. I wasnt going to add nutes till they were atleast 3 weeks old and much larger, but if they survive my soil i might just not add any at all.

Yeah, I'd make one more trip out, to the nearest hydro store, and snag a bag of Fox Farm Ocean Forest soil, and when you transplant to bigger pots, use that. I got desperate once and used Miracle Gro soil, and man, that stuff sucks. I will never *ever* use that stuff again. Even the crappy dirt from my front yard looks way better than that stuff. Ocean Forest, on the other hand, is just wonderful, nice and rich and loamy, with loads of organics that plants love.

Otherwise, looks good. I hope your eventual harvest is bountiful! ;)

Yah i mixed 3 bags to fill all pots, one was moisture control 18 10 10. The other was 14 14 14 regular miracle, the other bag was organic without any nutes in it. I didnt actually mix the soil, i put it in layers one of each about an inch deep all the way up to the top of the pot. Looking back i should have mixed it up to dilute the miracle grow soil with the organic soil, but as i water the plants over and over the nutes can leach down to the organic layers. Some pics of the soil i used.

Its ALIVE!!, Finally my babies have sprouted. They are very green and healthy looking so far. I added a 6 inch inline fan to the top of my box also to help with the temperatures, they should be in the low 80's now. I do have one question, How much should i water my seedlings? I have been watering them very lightly around the seedling itself with a waterbottle. I have been careful not to spray the seedling itself. So far with the air blowing right over the seedlings, and the heat in the mid 80's they are drying up very fast so I have been watering every day very lightly. No more then quarter a cup around the base of the seedlings.

As you can see by the darker soil (Waterd) that i have been very gently watering around the seedlings. Also how big before they start to really smell?

As for the Sodium light, yah I do have a very nice 150 watt light ready to go. I drilled holes in the side of the casing to allow the inside of the reflector to be vented by my dryer hose. I was going to save to HPS for flowering though, as I dont know yet if i can control the heat that such a powerful light would generate. I will install it though when its time to flower, but for now i was going to use CFL's for vegging these.

Hey joe,
What are ya gonna use as a fan for the dryer hose?
I use the CFL's all the way cause the have warm and cool where I live.
btw, I've read in a few places that the heat from CFL's can equal or top the heat from a HPS at the same wattage. ie:6*26WCFL vs 1*150WHPS.
To be honest, It's kinda hard to control the heat from my 200Watts of CFL. Not the direct heat so much as the total combined heat building up.
so if you can vent the 150WHPS completely you would be in real good shape.

YAh zcomp i think your right about the cfl's. I have the hose hooked up to the bathroom fan. it has a nice 4inch exhaust port that fits perfectly on the hose. I then lay the hose length wise infront of my seedlings as shown. Im going to switch my seedlings over to the HPS here in afew days. If i hook the hose right up to the HPS hood i can cool the bulb directly which I hope will lower the temps in my wardrobe.I will loose the direct cooling on the plants though, which can strengthen the stocks of the plants, but the temps are probably more important.

I have noticed a wierd yellowing on the tips of afew of my seedlings, im not exactly sure what it is. I have been picking the seed shells off my seedling when the emerged from the soil. Would this cause it to turn yellow at the tips?

well its been one week since I planted my seedlings, and so far 4 out of 5 seem to have made it. Between dreading coming home to a flaming house, I have gone to the hardware store. I have now over doubled my lumens of Lighting, since i was not satisfied with the level of growth. After the first 12 hours of the new lighting they really started to move.

This is what my new grow area looks like.

I have orderd a PH/ Moisture meter so i can keep track of the soil PH. Im still having issues with the heat so I have had to put a large ossilating fan infront of the door. since im still paranoid of a fire, even though the closet is wired very well, I set it to 18/6 day night timer. So The thing is only running for 4-6 hours while im not there. As I get more confident , I will move the timer back to 24hours eventually i guess. Im not sure when i should start feeding my plants nutes, or when i will be able to tell the sexes.

That should be plenty of light. Also I noticed your using a combo of 2 cool and 6 warm :) .
I did the opposite during veg(6Cool & 2Warm) so I'll be interested to see how this turns out.
If your like me then when you get to your grow you feel all the wires and transformers or ballasts to see how hot there actually getting.
I think that I read on this forum to start nutes at the 4th or 5th set of leaves, But some people start earlier. Always start weak and move up slowly.

Well I got some more pictures of my babies. I have named all four of them. They all look great, and are really growing fast. I have my heat problem under control somewhat. I raised the lights 2 inches farther from my plants and the surface temp is now a even 82F. Ismoke the plants are mostly indica but there is some sativa in this strain. Its called Flying Dutchman Royal orange. I did add some ferts, but i diluted them very very weak. I added 1/10th of the bottle strenth and only squirted quarter of a cup per seedling. They seem to really have enjoyed it since they started growing even more vigously once the nutes were added and the light were raised. I think i might try and vege them the whole way with CFL before i add in my Compressed sodium light. Hell I might even add both if i can control the heat. My fifth plant officially died, dunno was just probably a dud. But I planted another seed in its place. I took some pictures witha microscope just for fun.

Well its going on day 10 of my grow and so far The plants are looking really good. Except im getting worried about some deformed leaves and yellowing on the tip of some of them. Im not sure what its from or what it could be. The temps in my closet over between 78- 90 but there usually around 86. I have added a very tiny amount of nutrients to the soil and gave them a good watering afterwards. They are now on a full 24 hour cycle.

Heres pictures of the yellowing zoomed in 15x high res. and the picture of the deformed leafs.

Well its been 17 days now since the first seedlings broke the surface of the soil, and the progress has been amazing. I came close to killing my best plant with nutes, foolishly ignoring the advice i read all over the board about giving seedlings nutes. I learned my lesson and after two small flushes of 3 of my plants, they are once again as healthy as possible. With the onset of autum the temperatures in my cabinet have dropped a hardy 7 degress to a cool 80 with the doors closed. I have stopped worrying about them and now I just let them do there thing without me poking watering nuting and disturbing them.

Here are the pictures

Sorry about your close call. I noticed that nute burn on your tips. I did mine till they showed slight nute burn then pulled back on the nutes.
They do warn about nutes on young plants but only for the novice grower. Overloving your girl is very common :) .
And you should check youtube.com for grow vids. I learned alot there.

I intend to use CFL all the way. I've got 246W = 18K Lumens. I realize the lost lumens but I'm testing the spectrum of CFL's effect on Buds.
Come check me out, I'll catch ya later

Day 25
My plants are still doing awsome now, I have flushed them again and they are all very healthy still. They drink like there is no tommorow, and i have been able to keep the door on my cab closed for the past week. I crushed on of my plants alittle while ago and it was looking pretty grim but, it has bounced back and is now perky and healthy looking. Im starting to be able to smell a slight odor when my face is near the plants, I hope they dont get too stinky, but if they do my carbon filter is ready to go. I have also added Co2 using a 4 gallon water container a kilo of sugar some bread and yeast. The plants really seem to like it and growing even faster then i thought they would.

well I was looking at some other grows and noticed that my plants didnt seem to be sizing up to other peoples grows of the same age. So I decided i was going to add some more light to try and speed things up. So i hung a lamp to the side of one of my plants and put in a small 27watt white cfl and a tube along the back. I came back the next morning and noticed that one of my plants had drastically leaned towards the white cfl, and it had 2 larger more powerful CFLs closer to the top of it!. This really made me think and I started looking at spectrums. Turns out my big powerful cfl's are 2700K red light, which vegging plants dont like very much. So I went out and bought 6 6500k CFL's and put them in. Went to work again and when i came back HOLY COW!. each plant had grown almost an inch and bushed out by atleast an inch also. Im relived though that the 70 bucks i shelled out wont be wasted cause these lights are apparently good for flowering.

As for LSTing i did not even know what that was, but i looked it up and that seems like an interesting idea. Would I increase my yield by LSTing? Cause i have lots of vertical space.

Transplant DAY!!!! Well i got tired of using this miracle grow shit and decided that today would be a good day to transplant!!. So i went and bought a 40pounds bag of cow menure and a 40pound bag of Humus/ Peat moss mix and made a mix of 60percent menure 30 percent humus and 10 percent perelite mix. I then transplanted my plants from 1gallon pots to 3.3 gallon pots. I then used some powderd root stimulants all over the roots to help things along. I repotted and gave a heavy watering. The plants look a little anoyed but so far they are ok, and now that they are in a good soil mix im sure they will really start growing. Here are some pics of the new improved plants.

I too used MG during my first weeks. It was forever dropping in PH. I had to flush once every 2-Weeks just to bring my PH back up enough.
I do believe that you would increase yield indoors with LSTing. You can still start if your stems are still soft. LSTing allows us to shape the plant around the curve of light coming from your bulbs. Meaning more exposure = More bud. Just think of this.. Your very bottom branches are by default farthest from the light. If you were to tip the plant on its side then those bottom braches now become your top braches(closest to the light).
Outside this really isn't an issue cause the sun rotates to shine at all 180 degrees.

BTW you shouldn't bother switching to flower until you see alternating nodes. Its one of the first signs that the girl is mature enough for it.
Looking good.

Day 36

Well its been 36 days into vegging, and I took your advice zcomp and started Low stress training. I gave the plants a good watering before i started. I made anchors using pieces of wire from my dryer hose and used them to anchor down the main stalk of my plants. They have been like this for 4 days now and all the branches and shoots are now growing upwards. Rather then training the plants around in a circle im training it in a straight line since my plants arnt big enough. One plant is trained out of its pot and into the back of the next pot. My grow now looks more like a huge bush then and one plant hehehe. I am going to let them veg for another two weeks before starting flowering. I am anxious to know which are male and female.

Oh yeah baby. They look good. I don't try to have a plan when LSTing anymore. I just LST what I think will work best for my lights. I have a light meter so I have actually witnessed the curve of light from my bulbs.
Another point for ya, Now that you started LSTing, you'll notice they may become "side shoot maniacs". Thats a good time to decide which cream of the crop to take a clone from. Be sure to label each clone so you don't forget which one belongs to which.

JoeSchmoe

well its day 40, and I have been trying to sex my plants, out of 5 plants I now for sure that two are female. There are two that I think are male, and one is to young to show preflower yet. I took clones of the two males and stuck them in glasses of water, I put the glasses under my bathroom sink in total darkness. I am going to try and get them to start flowering. Although i know next to nothing about clones im hoping this will work, since the cuttings i took had preflower of some sort on em. I also took some pics through my maginfication lense. Its getting mega crowded, so Im almost hoping that there is a male in there so i can chuck it for space :).

Cloning is not an easy process, So read up on that if you want to give it a go. Now is probably a fine time to start flower. Remember that they double, triple and sometime's quadruple in size during flower.
A little hint on cloning, Remember in 3rd grade when your teacher had you grow marigold or whatever in a 2-liter bottle with saran wrap on top. Then we had put them in a windowsill,
That has much of the principles of cloning in that experiment.

Well I am now two days into flowering, and have switched my plants over to 12 12 light cycle. It turns out that my best plant was a male so I had to pull it out. I have now run out of room for LSTing, so I am let my plants grow upwards now. My lights have been switchd to red color for optimal flowering. I think i did pretty good 1 out of 5 plants male, I would say that is a pretty good ratio. Here are some pictures of my crop

Well I am now a week into flowering. I have started feeding my plants 5-30-5 bloom nutes and adding sugar to the water mix. Im not sure if this is better or worse the molasses but, i think it will have to same effect. I have added a 150watt HPS light into my grow cab along with the full setup of CFL bulbs. So now I have a mix of lights. I didnt realize how much more watering my plants needed, I almost killed one of them by not watering it enough. I solved a problem with my PH also where it was to alkaline, so i started adding a cup of lemon juice to the water to bring the PH down and it seems to have worked well. Because of my early low stress training ( Thanks zcomp) I have over twice the bud sites that I would have had otherwise. I just hope the plant dont outgrow my cab, I have about 3 feet of verticle room left.

RH = Relative Humidity(Average Humidity), Hey no prob you don't have one. You should stop at walmart and check one out. Mine is about 2"*3", its digital and has a "min" and "max" button(this way I can check how it got overnight).
Its not a big prob until about 1 to 1-1/2 Months into flower. After that you'll need to check it. Good airflow is #1 when buds hit.
Check you out soon.
Ps. I found the meter in the home section not the garden for my store. Yours may be diff. but don't give up. You need one and there only about $6.

I have been cleaning out large handfuls everyday. The top looks very health whoever so I am guessing that this is just a natural part of a LST grow. My buds are large and healthy looking, some of them even sparkle like they have snow on them. One in particular, my largest of the bunch is floresent red! it looks really cool. I have been feading them full strength 5 30 5 bloom nutes with Granulated sugar for extra carbon. They are thirsty plants and like to be waterd every 3 to 4 days. yeah, Dying of lower fans is normal. Whats not normal is to have one bud who's hairs have turned so red so early. That may be stress that caused those red hairs.
Red hairs will naturally start showing up now, But it should be uniform and start the same on all buds of the same plant.
Other than that, can't argue with success. Looks freakin awesome. Your gonna have some very nice buds when this finishes.
Now I'm gonna press you about the Humidity meter. Where is it?? Don't think you can just wing-it without one. Those look to be indica dominant, That means dense buds. That means that a little tiny bit of bud rot will ruin your entire crop. With those lights I'm gonna guess that the air is dry in that cab. But thats just a guess. If your humidity is rising above 60% at night(usually the time it goes up) your in big trouble soon.
Get back to me Joe. Please have a humidity meter when you do.

Thats fantastic man(29%). If you can keep it under say 50% at night, That would be good. My experience tells me that lower humidity means more crystals. There could be problems with too low humidity. But Where I am, Never had that worry.
Check with some fellow Canadians to see what your concerns should be. But every good grower is equipped with a humidity meter. Great job so far. I foresee a happy harvest.

Well its been 4 and a half weeks into flowering and the plants were looking really yellow. The upper fan leafs started to turn yellow and look like they were about to fall off.I wanted to flower my plants for another 4 weeks if possible to maximize the yield, so i gave them a large dose of Nitrogen. This has greened them up enought that they dont look so sick. I took off a bud and microwaved it with damp paper towels. The smoke wasnt as harsh as i thought it would be, and it gave me a nice cerebral high. Im going to sample it every 2 weeks to find out when it would be best to harvest it.

I left my window open and the temperature swung from 13degress celcius up to 38 degress celcius. They look fine though and that was 4 days ago. I have not been able to get out to radio shack to buy a microscope, but I have tried to improvise with my camera zoom and a 10x mag loop. The pistils still look pretty clear, so im going to have to keep on flowering till they cloud up. Humidity has been stable at 25percent day and night and the temperatures im my closet are usually in the mid 90's in Fahrenheit. I know that is pretty high, but I cannot open my window to cool the room or the pipes in my place will freeze and burst.

Thanks guy, it took alot of time and effort and research to get to this point ;-). Im pretty sure im going to harvest this tonight, I like the more cerebral highs that a earlier harvest will provide.

Wow this looks like a great harvest...it must be very rewarding to see all your hard work develop then finally be able to smoke it...I am just setting up now for my first grow, it will be similar to yours...i have been reading journals and im gettin really excited to get started...as soon as i get back from christmas holidays i can start germination...right now ive got my cab built and wired and vented and im letting it run on 24h to see if i can keep the temperature good or if i need more venting...thought that would be better than trying to fix it all as the plants are trying to grow....January 3rd cant come fast enough!

Nice going, JoeShmoe.
I pulled early last grow because we like a heady high also. I really works well like that. We were pleased.

This grow I'm going to pull some earlier but most of them later to impress the friends. I should start pulling a couple of plants in a week and these should be still some clears and the rest when they are mostly rusty colored. maybe in three more weeks.

Here's the last grow log harvest. (http://boards.cannabis.com/grow-log/102542-shovs-afghani-x-bog-medley-spring-grow-5.html)
