WARNING: This is a precautionary question from a newbie.

I'm curious if there is any reason I shouldnt add an inch of pure pearlite to the top of my soil to slightly increase light on the underside of the plant?

Nope!
Except for the fact that if there's a lot of perlite in your mix anyway, it DOES tend to float up by itself... so you could just wait instead.
A layer of perlite (you don't need that much) also makes it easier to keep thinkgs clean- it stays dry, so dead leaves don't get all damp and nasty before you have a chance to remove them, and bugs don't especially like the stuff.

Sweet! So are you saying I had a good idea in the midst of this incredibly confusing high I'm chilln with right now?...Yeah me:thumbsup:

This is the begining of my first somewhat educated grow. I've only got two little Inuets, which WILL turn out to be nurturing mothers to clips which will be born into a hydroponic sog. Of course, NOTHING will go wrong! but incase it does I'll have plenty of supports ready! In a day or two or three I'll make a log on here, maybe you guys could learn a little sumthin'!;)

apparently an inch of playsand (baked at 375F of course) will help with gnats and other burrowing larvae.

I have yet to validate this though.
