View Full Version : Shov's Christmas Grow

Shovelhandle
08-17-2007, 05:33 PM
Yah, Christmas is coming, so I decided to start a grow that will be curing in time for the holidays.
This morning I mixed a batch of soil using promix potting soil, vermiculite, perlite, and worm castings. I filled 24 or so two cup pots, topped off with plant starter mix and planted some Bubblegum as well as some seeds from my last grow which were bagseed Y, bagseed Z and Foxy Seeds Afghani x BOG Medley. The X and Y plants were polinated with the Foxy Seed plants. They are put under four T-5 54W lamps for now.

I'll put up photos as soon as things sprout.

I posted the first log in this "new" forum last year and followed up with another. Both use the T-5 HO lamps. They were not the best grows efficiency wise but I found it acceptable, for sure! Really not bad at all!

I do have about 40-50 sprouts in 20 pots and I've already picked out a dozen or two weeklings. (as usual, look at my other logs in the first weeks. Must be because I come from a very large family) <G>

I'm taking good care of them and I will photo them as soon as I thin them into one per pot.

It was probably more like 80 seeds. But I will cull down to a dozen and then hope I have room for them all until they show sex. I hope for six to eight plants to mature.

See my post in Basic Growing "What ate my Bubblegum..."

I repotted 18 plants. Sorry to say, I only have one good bubblegum right now.

Criteria...hmmm, I know what that is <G> I save the strong, kill the weak and infirmed! <G>. Well, the BG seeds are commercial seed stock, so I plant and cull less of them. The other seeds I have plenty to play with.

Sorry, no pics yet. I'm very busy, going out of town and coming back with my daughter for a few days visit.

Photos aren't the best... I think the soil is too hot. I used last grow's soil and it had lots of flower nutes. I did thin it out with new vermiculite, perlite, worm castings and early potting soil. The plants that are making it now are tough. Pretty much got each variety covered pretty well though. I'm sure it's gonna fire up nicely soon. <G>

I re-hung the (2) 2 lamp x 4' T-8s and (1) (4) lamp x 4' T-5HOs
and transplanted a dozen plants into larger 2-3 gallon planters. I also FIMed these 12 plants (foxyseed afghani, "Y" and "Z" types). Most have 6 or more nodes. I usually wait until the sixth week but this is almost the end of the fifth week this time.
The (4) little bubblegums, I just moved them into two larger pots. Then I watered 'emall in with Neptune nutes.
After all this I moved out all the small pots an swept up the loose soil and dust.

I usually post photos on Friday, so stay tuned. <G>

Five and a half weeks since planting the seeds and I've got female preflowers on two plants, both are Foxy Seeds afghani hybrid (I need a better name for this variety, Stinker). Tomorrow when I water I'll re-arrange so I can keep a good eye out for other developements.

ya well, officially, I guess there's plenty of tight-assed protocol to the naming of the strains but I'd rather be able to call it something and have the people in the know, know what I'm talikng about. Dig? We just call is the afghani hybrid, I guess that's ok but no credit to the work done.

The plants are in their sixth week. The FIMed tops are starting to heal. And, I stripped the bottom three or so nodes from the bottom. I've been feeding Fish emulsion and fish/seaweed emulsion.

There are two Afghani hybrids (I lost the photos while editing...duh!), both show female pistils like this...

It's been 8 weeks and time to flip. However, I just picked up a nute pack from Technafloura Plant Products so I fed them the menu as shown. The 12 or so plants take 4 gallons of water with "BC Boost", "BC Grow", "Thrive Alive B1 Red", and a foliar feeding of "Thrive Alive B1 Green".

While the plants are dripping and drying I will swap out the (8) 4' 5000K flourescent tubes for the 3000K Flowering Stage lighting.
I will use plain water for the next two feedings and go to the Technafloura Flowering Stage products.

Have any of you tried these products and have an opinion of their value?

Thanks,

I have to cull the crop. Too crowded in the 3' x 4' space.
I had been waiting to cull male plants but each of the 12 plants to show sex have been females!

Here are the remaining four plants. They are looking pretty fine, but haven't shown preflowers and like I said, too crowded so out they go.
[attachment=o161340]

Sho

Shovelhandle
10-16-2007, 03:26 PM
A couple of other growing points of interest. I also trained the remaining plants. Kind of lst but the way I do this (usually outdoors) is to fold the long branches right over. Now the plants are taking over a larger footprint of light but more of the bottoms of each plant get better light too. Bottom line, everything is as crowded as before.

Also, Last night I noticed that the light timer had not shut off. It was broken. So I replaced it with a spare and since I had (thought that I had) started 12-12, I wasn't sure how long I was on 24-0 Definetly only a day or so. So I set it up for 6 am-6 pm lights on starting tomorrow am. So, the plants will have a dark period for about 30 hours before they start into flowering stage.....again. : )

The (4) culled plants are just too nice to ditch outright, and I'd like to see if actually, all 16 plant are females (indoors they are 12 for 12 so far...no males!) So, I put the four plants in a cold frame. They will have to go 8 weeks at least to maturity and in Vermont this is doubtful, but we've had some weird weather lately, so here goes!

I'll post a pic of the two Afghani plants at the end of this week or so.

What's a cold frame?

Shovelhandle
10-17-2007, 12:46 PM
a cold frame is like a low-rise greenhouse. Just a wooden frame sitting on the ground with a pane of glass on top. It keeps the cold night air from the plants and heats up the soil nicely during the day.

The grow is two weeks into flowering now. I've continued to thin the crop and now have only 8 female plants (no males), but it's as thick as it's ever been.

This is a "Z". As I posted early on, I FIMed the Zs, the Ys, the Afghani hybrids. About two weeks ago I bent them over kind of like a LST but not so much on the "L" (light). I have four Zs and one Y.
[attachment=o163011]

This one is an Afghani hybrid, there are two of these varieties.
[attachment=o163012]

And this is a Bubblegum from seed. I've only one of these. It was started a few weeks later than the others. The other BG was the only male that sprouted this grow. I did not FIM or train this plant either. I'm hoping for good weight from this one as BG is my fav amongst these varieties.

Shovelhandle
11-09-2007, 05:57 PM
Of course you can see that the plants are in soil.
Anyhow, I use 2 tablespoons to the gallon. And at this time I can feed each of the plants 2 quarts of liquid at each watering. I water every 2-3 days.
And like I said, I'm using two gallons (2 quarts each for eight plants = 2 gallons).
The plants will probably not get much "thirstier" from this point on, maybe three gallons every other day.
I have a cycle of three. Nute - Molasses/Water -Plain Water.
I'm using a technofloura nute program.

Thanks for asking.

I decided to try and get some of this grow ready for the holiday. Yup, a little late but I can't rush now. The plants have flowered for 8 weeks. The Zs have some cloudies showing so I am going to pull two of them this week.
Today I flushed all 5 Zs and aerated the soil using a garden trowel around the edge of the buckets and lifting the soil up. Most plants seem to like this, especially in wet conditions (such as flushing). They are back in the garden to dry for a couple of days before I put 'em in the dark/warm for 36 hours before I harvest.

I tried to take some pics but I was too shakeeey but here's a couple.

Thank you, JG. I wish I could take the time to photograph the plants better... Lazy about that, I guess. Your logs are doing very well too, Bub! It sure would be fun to share our stashes with each other here in the Grow Log Forum, but I guess we'll have to just smoke our own and pretend. lol

BTW, the best weed from my last grow was the afghani x bog medley from Foxy Seeds. It really works well (it got better after it cured for a few months too). I used a male to germinate with the fems of the same Foxy seed as well as the "Z" bagseed plants. So, these plants all have those genes except for the bubblegum. I can't wait until the crop is finished (cut, dried and cured for a few months). I just hope that I have enough stash to last that long. <G>

The temps in the grow have been 10º lower than normal. I'm using 100% flourescents with electronic ballasts, so not much heat there. This has effected the grow as some of the buds are smaller and growth is slower. For the size of this grow I could add an HID ficture but no funds for that. A 1500 watt electric heater with fan and t'stat is overkill. So, I got a heavy duty GE Halogen 70W flood lamp. This will suply some additional lighting and lots of heat!
I have a couple of themometers set up, so I'll see how it's working out.

Thanks,

Shov

The Z-ghanis are not as ready as I wanted, so today I put the one plant having the most difficulty with the cool/dampness into the dark for 36 hrs preharvest. I changed the 70 W halogen flood for a 100W and that brought the temp up to 70-75º. Much better. Inspection with a microscope shows 50/50 clear and cloudy trics as well as a little bit of red spots in some.

Here's a photo of the one little Bubblegum in front of four of the Z-ghanis.

Garden temps have been 75-85º lately, that's real good.

I have the first plant trimmed and hanging after 48 hours of darkness as suggested by BOG, Jorges and other smart peeps, some say it's an old wives tale.

How tall are the plants? Well, they have been broken over, so they aren't as tall as they would otherwise be. I'd say 18" average but they would have been 36" had they been left alone. Why did I do this? To keep the buds closer to the lights.

They look just about cooked in some photos, but under the microscope the trics are still 50% clear. The hairs are mostly dark though. They have been flowering for nine weeks, I think most of them will need 1-3 more weeks, especially that Bubblegum.

I don't think I will have any of this ready for the holiday, but luckily I still have stash from the last indoor grow (my summer/outdoor grow was stolen).

Thanks for the kind words,

Sorry to hear about your summer grow being stolen, Nothing pisses me off more than having my plants stolen. I have had it happen too. So to counter a compleat loss, I now do several small to medium size gardens in differant locations far enough apart so if one is found they won't find the rest. This year I hope to do a bumper crop outside with cloans.

Also thanks for the reply I was wondering because mine are slightly taller 20" to 28" tall right now at the end of their 3rd week of flower. This gives me an idea of what to expect.

Anyway, this morning I was inspecting the remaining five plants and one "Z" has a lot of purple showing on her, more than any of the other plants! The positive power of suggestion, maybe?

Well today I put the last (5th) Z into it's 36 hour pre-harvest darkness and hung the 4th Z out to dry. I think the two Foxy Seeds afghani hybrids and the Bubblegum will be harvested within the next week, which will be 12 weeks of bloom cycle (more than the advertised eight weeks). They are starting to show amber a little bit.

I will be curious if the Bubblegum has seeds like the Z plants have. This would be an interesting hybrid as the BBG is not a hybrid and has been growing here for years.

The initial smoke report on the first Z plant (which was the smallest) is very positive. Brother pretty much loved it, and he's a fussy pot connisseur! It really does need to finish curing, though I thought that it is pretty potent herb. I think that I will start smoking on it and put the little bit of 'ghani I have left from last spring/summer grow away for a bit. I have about 5-6 joints worth left.

Thanks,

Thank you,

Here are the final three plants dried, trimmed and canned.

Bubblegum doesn't seem to have ANY seeds. I forgot to weigh this but it's just short of an ounce.
[attachment=o173304]

One of the Foxyseeds Afghani x BOG from seeds I grew out last grow.
Yes, it is very purple.
[attachment=o173305]

Another Foxyseeds Afghani x BOG but not purple.

All Put Up. Total, well over eight ounces.

Oh ya, the Bubblegum looks fuzzy, it is actually super-frosted!

I'll update with better photos and smoke report when it's cured.

I see you have the microscope I just picked up. I can't seem to keep my hand steady enough! Seems to be more useful in viewing individual trichs than a cluster hahaha. Maybe a little too powerful, BUT still fun to use!!!:stoned::stoned:

Nice stuff you got there!!! Good job!

Balkey,
Try putting some little leaves, calaxes or bugs, etc on a table and practice working with it (buy some batteries : ] )

Thanks,

Shov,

What power is your microscope and are you able to examine the flowers with it while growing? I stopped by the local hydro shop last week looking at one and was skeptical that it would be useful for me. I also wear reading glasses, which kinda makes looking at detail a bitch anyway.

Man, very nice grow! Enjoy the crop!!

Try putting some little leaves, calaxes or bugs, etc on a table

Thats what I do as well since the shakes is way to much to freehand check out a plant. When I got the scope someone else here ad posted about trimming off small leaves from top, middle & bottom of the plant then check them on a convenient flat surface.

Lovely buds there Shov, on the hunt for some nice colourful plants I can do myself.

Thanks Rich,
I have to clip tiny pieces of the bud off and view them on a table. I wear glasses and have to take them off to use the scope, it's a bitch.
The little microscopes are $14 or so in Radio Shack and are adjustable from 60X to 100X.

I packed up my bowl and took a hit. Smoke is mild and smooth. No expansion or choking.

Look at the picture (please enlarge). Lots of frosting!
[attachment=o173873]

I took two more hits, now I will wait for a bit.

The afghani-bog trial
The afghani x bog I tried yesterday was great! I smoked up a bowl around 10 am, did a bunch of chores, shopping, went swimming laps for an hour and was still WRECKED at 2:00 pm, I shit you not. Not the most couchloak, dibilitating high, but a strong head buzz that really hangs in there.

I expect that the Foxy version is even better, though the yield and bud size was slightly less/smaller.

And even better yet, I expect this bubblegum to be a winner.

I'll report on this bubblegum and the foxy-afghan x bog another time.

Thank you, I'm buzzed <G>

yes, smokenss. I was pleased to see a few beautiful seeds in the Bubblegum buds. Only one plant in the grow had a million seeds, the others have two or three seeds per bud, or less. I understand that these seeds are likely feminized as the therory is that there must have been a hermie in the grow (that I never noticed). The bubblegum crossed with the afghani will likely produce very nice plants sometime.

As far as the taste test...I got called to work by a client, which was a real buzz kill. Smoked some with my bro last evening and we thought that it was real good ; )

Thanks,

Sho

Just about three Ozs of Foxy's Afghani Dream x Bog Medley, which I self pollinated last grow for seeds.

Smoke testers say... Very excellent buzz, wicked long lasting too.. One plant was purp one wasn't. This grow I crosses the afghanis with the Bubblegum. I think that should produce an outstanding smoke,

That purple bud is freaking awesome. How the hell did you get it that color Shov? I cant say that I've ever seen purple bud. I've seen purple leaves on plants but not buds.

Hi Miley,
They purple color seems to be a trait passed on to some phenos of the afghani from my bag seed grow and the Foxyseed Afghani hybrid. It's funny, half will have the purple leaves and later on purple buds, other plants will be nice and "green-tan".

Bubblegum may turn purple outdoors from the autumn cold but I've not had any purple from the indoor plants.
[attachment=o174544]

Although I've kept each plant's harvest separate it takes a lot of smoking for me to report on the quality, since it's ALL GOOD! <G>

glad you like my third grow log here.
I been laid up in hospital last week with total shoulder replacement. My next grow may not start for a couple of months so I have time to think on it. I really like all three varieties of the last grow, so I don't know...

I did make a ball of hashish from some of the trim of that last grow. Nice, strong and expanding. Though I think it was only a couple of grams. Still have most of it. can't photo right now, tooo sick.

Have a great day.

Afghani Dream x BOG Medley which I grew from back-crossed seeds.

I grew out two of these plants and side by side they grew identically. ...until they were in flower and showed color.

Here is one of the young plant which produced more of a green/gold colored bud

Shov, I'm really sorry to hear of your shoulder replacement. Major joint work is a horrible thing to endure. I missed most of your christmas grow unfortunately, but due to your regular updates, I was able to catch up upon my return to canna.com.

Has recovery been kind, or are you still in the process of recovering shov?

Thanks, PGW
My shoulder feels fine, though I'm not supposed to do anything with it yet. I do passive range of motion exercises. This week I start pool therapy, which is wonderful as wife and I practically swim every day.

Hey, Stinkyattic,
Did you see the photos of the two Foxy Seed plants posted on this thread on 3/3/08 ? Did that answer your question on the color of the plants and the dried bud? Also, no clones, just some seed. I'll probably try to grow some out someday.

Shov....it's good that you have such a love of swimming. That may be the very best thing for joint issues.

Also, it's nice to see that you are working the BOG genetics. I still see BOG seeds listed in a couple of places, but obviously they're always out of stock. I think I came into the internet growing scene too late to get in on BOG gear. Any rumors of BOG coming out oof retirement?

uhhhh, that was some time ago. lol I planted all those seeds from that grow. They are outdoors and in three states. I'll likely never get back to most of them. Some are in hospital parking lots, peoples back yards, etc. All only known to me (and some to my wife). I do have a bunch of the seeds (not feminized) from the previous grow that the purple Foxy phenom came from though. Someday, maybe. I have a few seeds (feminized) from the purple pheno Bubblegum hybrid. That is some great weed!
